ROC the Future is an alliance of over 50 leading Rochester-area institutions and community
partners dedicated to ensuring that all children receive the opportunities and support they need to succeed in
school and throughout life. ROC the Future promotes community collaboration, alignment, and the focused
use of resources to improve the academic achievement of Rochester’s children.
Improving third-grade literacy is the initial focus of ROC the Future. Our efforts build on the proven
strategies of the Annie E. Casey Foundation’s Campaign for Grade Level Reading which prioritizes three areas:
1) School Readiness, 2) Attendance, and 3) Expanded Learning Opportunities.
Convener organizations are listed below. More than 30 additional partners participate in 1 or more of our
collaborative action networks.

ROC the Future’s collaborative action networks work to
improve outcomes for all children as measured by the 45
indicators we track (ACTrochester.org/roc-the-future),
including the 10 key indicators shown. Perinatal Action
Network is developing actions plans to address the need
for information on effective, developmentally supportive
parenting and safe and stable housing. School Readiness
Network developed an action plan to comprehensively
screen all 3 year-olds. The network is now addressing
what else is necessary to ensure families, health
professionals, and schools are ready to support young
children. Attendance Initiative Network is focused on
improving the attendance of chronically absent K-3
students. E-mail Rhonda.kirkland@rcsdk12.org to
volunteer for an attendance blitz. Expanding Learning
Opportunities Network has identified an outcome
tracking measure for social-emotional learning. The
network will continue piloting and evaluating its use in
improving student engagement, health and wellness,
intrapersonal development, life and career skills, and social
relationships and ultimately children’s ability to succeed in
school and in life. College Access Network developed a
website (rochestercan.org) to provide information on local
colleges and applying for financial aid. The network seeks
to increase the number of students completing the Free
Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and also
supports local college visits for 10th graders. To volunteer
for FAFSA Fest, e-mail shencke@gmail.com.
Reduced chronic absence by 10.7 percentage points During the 2014-15 school year 442
more K-3 students in 13 target schools attended school at least 90% of the time as a result of
three years of collaborative work through the Rochester City School District’s (RCSD)
Attendance Initiative.
Helped secure funding for comprehensive, integrated developmental
screenings for 3-year-olds (GROW Rochester) ROC the Future helped
secure a $789,000, 3-year commitment to scale-up and integrate
comprehensive vision, hearing, and developmental screenings for 3 year-olds
beginning fall 2015. Funders include the Greater Rochester Health Foundation,
the United Way, the City of Rochester, and the Community Foundation.
Expanded evidence-based book distribution All RCSD K-11 students had an opportunity to
choose books for summer reading, a practice proven to reduce summer reading loss.
Increased summer learning opportunities by 25% In summer 2015 RCSD and partners
increased enrichment and recovery summer learning
opportunities by 25% over 2014 – serving more than 12,500
students.
Increased filings of college financial aid forms Applications by
Rochester City School District students for federal student aid rose
9% from March 2014 to March 2015.
