Sustainable development is key for the future. This presentation wants to show El Salvador's reality and make suggestions to improve their current situation.
2. ElSalvador
- - Located in Central America with an area of
21,040 km2
- -Their people is known for their hospitality,
kindness and perseverance
- - Despite their size, the country is very rich in
biodiversity:
- - Of the 8 sea turtle species, 4 nest in
Salvadoran cost
- -With his privileged tropical climate it is home
for 500 species of birds, 1,000 species of
butterflies, 400 species of orchids, 800 species
of trees, and 800 species of marine fish
4. Reality check
Due to their social and economic
problems, environmental issues are
not a priority.
Overpopulation, poor education,
deficient health system, and lack of
control points for industries and
citizens have severely damaged the
environment.
Additionally, economic and social
indicators reflects uncertainty in the
near future.
5. ElSalvador’s
environmental
problems
El Salvador is the second most deforested country in Latin America, with
only 2% of the land area forested. Less than 6,000 hectares are classified
as primary forest
Over 50% of El Salvador is not even suitable for food cultivation
The country is dealing with severe soil erosion
Soil erosion
and
deteriorating
land
productivity
Air pollution
and water
sanitation
Vulnerability
The country ranked #1 in the world climate risk index issued by German
Watch in 2009 and it is listed among the 10 countries in the world that
are most vulnerable to natural hazards (CRED/OFDA). More than 88% of
the national territory is at risk, containing 95.4% of the total population.
Over 90% of the surface water is contaminate. El Salvador has the
lowest overall water coverage in Central America
90% of industrial wastewater is discharged to rivers and creeks without
any treatment
Air pollution levels have been raising since mid 90’s. San Salvador’s (the
country capital) is challenging Mexico City as the hemisphere's most
contaminated city
6. In conclusion,
Salvadorian
behavior is not
in line with
sustainable
development
• Education and health care are deficient, specially in the rural territory. Without
basic education the concept of sustainability is foreign to most Salvadorians
• Economic growth has been discrete with an average of 2% per year in the last
decade. This performance has made El Salvador the slowest growing economy of
Central America in recent years. The slow growth has lead to lack of investment
and obsolete and dangerous production systems
• 41% of households lived below the poverty line in 2015, including 10% which lived
below the extreme poverty line. In these conditions most Salvadorians are not
willing to pay an extra penny for sustainably developed products
Poverty and
lack of
education
Violence and
impunity
Poor
regulations
• Environmental law is not a priority. This mirrors in most businesses failing to even
attempt to incorporate waste and pollution controls in their processes
• El Salvador is the second most violent country in America. Even though the
government has invested in several programs to reduce the rates, the results are
unclear and have been criticized by the UN. Many Salvadorians think they have a
lot to worry to add environmental issues to the list.
• People and international organisms do not believe in the justice system. The
country if often known for corruption scandals and impunity. There has been
important cases with severe health and environmental consequences that have
been left unpunished.
8. Social Impact
Plan social strategies and solutions for the
long term
Use technology as an allied to
improve health and education
Integrate sustainable
development topics to the
education curriculum
Reinforce the justice system and
show transparency in the public
administration
Encourage civil participation of all kinds
(elections, forums, social movements)
A society always runs around
people. So, the development
and happiness of the
individuals must be the
primary reason for the
government existence
El Salvador’s needs to work
on a more inclusive –
equalitarian society that
helps to overcome economic
and social issues
The focus should be on
developing the people in
terms of education, social
participation, and the
protection of their rights
9. Environmental
impact
El Salvador’s is one of the leaders
in geothermal power in the
world.With private and public
partnerships this resource can be
translated into the primary
source of energy for the country
Due to its privilege climate, other
sources of clean energy such as
Eolic and Solar can be develop.
Create legislation to protect
crucial resources (water, clean air
and land) and ecosystems
Incentive green projects with
fiscal exceptions and easy
funding
10. Economic
Impact
A perfect way to achieve economic impact is by
using the SharedValue strategy created by
Michael Porter
Creating SharedValue links a company’s profit
strategy and, at the same time, asses social and
environmental issues, with the goal of develop
better commercial opportunities for both ends:
the company and the community
This encourage intersectoral dialogue to allow
cooperation between government and
companies
Additionally, the government must get a fiscal
pact to allow new growth opportunities
-------------------------------------------------
----------
Some easy initiatives to implement can be:
Alliances with NGOs to bring solutions like
LifeStraw (bottles that can clean polluted water)
Work with univertisities to create spaces for
entrepernurship
Use social media to incentive national products
and services, specially green projects
Include holistic KPIs such as % of renewable
energy from total energy consumption, hours
spent on learning and development, and green
investment
11. Conclusions
• - Government and companies need to work together in
order to achieve economic and social growth and, at
the same time, create sustainable solutions for future
generations
• - Education is key to inspire people to create innovative
solutions and to have a different perspective of what it
is require to make profits and growth
• -The country is already dealing with the consequences
of zero environmental protection and impunity.
Environmental law is a must to ensure a safety
environment in work places and communities.
