WPCC honors February as Black History Month with three free events. OnTuesday, Feb. 17,
historian Dr. Kenneth Zogry offers “North Carolina’s Long Civil Rights Movement” from 7 to
8:15 p.m. He will give an illustrated lecture, including many rarely seen historical images, that
will provide an overview of civil rights efforts during Reconstruction, theWhite Supremacy
campaign of the 1890s, African-American political organization in the 1910s and labor move-
ments of the 1930s, as well as the better-known sit-ins, protests, and struggles to integrate
the state’s public schools from the 1950s into the 1970s. Individuals important to the move-
ment will be introduced including Dr. ManassaT. Pope (shown left), who ran for mayor in
Raleigh in 1919 and was the first licensed African-American doctor in North Carolina.
In addition, the presentation‘“The Home Game”: Burke CountyYouth and the Civil Rights Movement’will be held on
Tuesday, Feb. 24 at 12:30 p.m. Just as it brought change to the entire country, the Civil Rights Movement transformed the
lives of the citizens of Burke County—young and old.We often hear the stories of the adults who advanced the cause of
social justice during those turbulent times. At this event, however, attendees will hear untold tales of the youth who are
now adult leaders in our community who lived through the trials and triumphs of local public school desegregation.
Also available free to the public is a viewing of the film BloodDoneSignMyNameon
Wednesday, Feb. 25 at 6 p.m. iThe film, based on the award-winning book of the same
name by Dr.TimTyson, tells the true story of the brutal murder of an African-American
Vietnam veteran, Henry Marrow, by a group of white men in Oxford, NC in 1970.The
acquittal by an all-white jury sparked activism and a struggle for social justice in Oxford
and across the state. The film stars Nate Parker as local high school teacher Ben Chavis
who goes on to be a leader of the Civil Rights Movement and president of the National
Association for the Advancement of Colored People.
Each event will be held in Leviton Auditorium in Moore Hall on the main campus.
