Judge James E. Graves, Jr., of the United States Fifth Circuit
Court of Appeals will deliver the 2014 Commencement address for
Southern University Law Center at 10 a.m., Saturday, May 10, in the
F.G. Clark Activity Center on the Southern University Baton Rouge
campus.
One hundred and fifty graduates are expected to receive the
Juris Doctor Degree this spring.
Judge Graves was nominated to the federal bench by President
Barack Obama and confirmed on a voice vote in the U.S. Senate
on February 14, 2011. He is the first African-American judge from
Mississippi ever to serve on the Fifth Circuit.
Graves began his legal career in 1980 as a staff attorney at Central Mississippi Legal
Services. At that time he also began his 17 years of service as an adjunct professor at Jackson
State University.
After three years at Legal Services, he entered private practice, with a focus on civil mat-
ters in state and federal court. From 1986 to 1990, he served as a special assistant attorney
general in the Human Services and Health Law divisions of the Office of the Mississippi Attorney
General. Graves was director of the Division of Child Support Enforcement for the Mississippi
Department of Human Services until his appointment to the Hinds County Circuit Court in 1991.
After serving ten years on the Hinds County Circuit Court, Graves was appointed an as-
sociate justice of the Mississippi State Supreme Court. He was elected to the court in 2004. He
later became a presiding justice.
The Clinton, Mississippi, native earned a B.A. from Millsaps College in Jackson, Mississip-
pi, in 1975; a J.D. from Syracuse University in 1980; and a master’s degree in public administra-
tion from Syracuse in 1981.
Along with his legal work and teaching career, Graves has been very active in local and
national bar associations. He is a Fellow of the Mississippi State Bar, and has served on a vari-

experience and insights on the tools of career success from 4-5:30 p.m. Wednesday, April 2, in

Judicial Wall of Fame Portraits Unveiling and Installation set for 4 p.m.
Thursday, April 3, at the Gallery at Manship Theatre, Shaw Center for the
Arts, in downtown Baton Rouge.
The event is part of the 2014 Alumni Round-Up and will include

Following the unveiling and installation ceremony, these portraits
will be placed with 23 others that now hang in the North Wing of A. A.
Lenoir Hall.

Chancellor Freddie Pitcher, Jr., said.
Vice Chancellor Russell L. Jones, ’82, Jesse N. Stone, Jr.,
Endowed Professor of Law, will be master of ceremony for the event.
Short Story Contest deadline announced

story contest sponsored by Hofstra Law School.
Original, previously unpublished short
works of fiction (under 3,500 words) featur-

Susan Nelson’s pa-
per, “Increased Penalties for
Child Pornography Leading
to Reparation for Victims: A
Federal Legislative Model
for Criminal and Civil Re-
form,” was selected as the
second-place paper to NCVLI’s 4th Annual Law
Student Victims’ Rights Writing Competition. As
the second-place winner, Nelson will receive a
$100 prize, a waiver of conference tuition, and
will be part of a panel presenting Emerging Vic-
tims’ Rights: Law Student Perspectives, which
is scheduled for 9:40 a.m. Saturday, June
21. Nelson’s paper was written for Prof. Ruby
Andrew’s Legislative Drafting Seminar.
Prof. Chris Odinet will be the guest
speaker at the monthly meeting of the Baton
Rouge Property Lawyers at noon Wednesday,
April 2, at the Baton Rouge City Club. Odinet
will discuss his article, “Successor Liability for
Lenders Turned Declarants in Louisiana Com-
mon Interest Communities,” which will appear
in the upcoming issue of the Louisiana Law
Review.
Jared Evans, ’12, has recently transferred within the Louisiana State House of Repre-
sentatives to the Committee on Transportation, Highways, and Public Works. Evans formerly
drafted legislation and resolutions and analyzed education and municipal issues. His work is
now dedicated solely to issues relative to transportation and highways for the legislature.
Angela White-Bazile, ’96, has been promoted to executive counsel in the Office of the
Chief Justice Bernette Joshua Johnson of the Louisiana Supreme Court, effective March 24.
White-Bazile served as a law clerk and research attorney in Justice Johnson’s office for the
past 10 years. In the last year, she has served as DJA--Deputy Special Counsel in the Chief
Justice’s office.

and Public Defender’s Task Force.
Judge Graves is married to Bettye Ramsey Graves, Ph.D., associate vice president for enroll-
ment management at Jackson State University. The couple has three sons, and are members of
the New Heights Seventh-day Adventist Church in Jackson.

As the second-place winner, Nelson will receive a $100 prize, a waiver of conference tuition, and will be part of a panel presenting Emerging Vic- tims’ Rights: Law Student Perspectives, which is scheduled for 9:40 a.m. Saturday, June 21. Nelson’s paper was written for Prof. Ruby Andrew’s Legislative Drafting Seminar. Prof. Chris Odinet will be the guest speaker at the monthly meeting of the Baton Rouge Property Lawyers at noon Wednesday, April 2, at the Baton Rouge City Club. Odinet will discuss his article, “Successor Liability for Lenders Turned Declarants in Louisiana Com- mon Interest Communities,” which will appear in the upcoming issue of the Louisiana Law Review. Jared Evans, ’12, has recently transferred within the Louisiana State House of Repre- sentatives to the Committee on Transportation, Highways, and Public Works. Evans formerly drafted legislation and resolutions and analyzed education and municipal issues. His work is now dedicated solely to issues relative to transportation and highways for the legislature. Angela White-Bazile, ’96, has been promoted to executive counsel in the Office of the Chief Justice Bernette Joshua Johnson of the Louisiana Supreme Court, effective March 24. White-Bazile served as a law clerk and research attorney in Justice Johnson’s office for the past 10 years. In the last year, she has served as DJA--Deputy Special Counsel in the Chief Justice’s office.
