ADOLESCENCE
According to Piaget the Formal operational stage is from about eleven years upwards which is supposed
to be the adolescence stage. During early adolescence, the child may “change gear’ to the level of
formal operations. At this level, children may engage in more abstract thinking, for instance they may
engage in substance abuse or peer pressure as a consequence they make wrong decisions which may
impact them negatively. Thus, they may be able to think about ‘if …then…’ situations that involve abstract
relations.
The role of social context in formal operational thinking is more important than it is in any other stage.
Although people may be in the adolescence stage, they still need concrete examples and illustrations to
help them understand abstract relationships.
In all Piagetian stages, children do not suddenly move from one ‘gear’ into another- from one stage into
the next. They move gradually, and at their own pace. Thus, some abstract thinking is always
possible, particularly in the later concrete operational stage which is from about seven to about eleven
years. Equally, some concrete operational thinking will always continue right through adulthood.
At this stage students want to think independently from their parents, thus they want to make their own
decisions such as making a chose of who they are, what they want , where they are going and out of it all
keeping time for all the things you have to do.

Every person plays many roles in life. The most important are: family, personal
relationships, spiritual, social, career, financial, education, and physical. Compromise of
any of these will eventually compromise the others. Effective time management will
allow you to feel positive and achieve a state of balance and harmony in mind, body
and soul.
Here is an example of a time pie chart you can draw up your own to be able to manage
your time effectively.
