Dear Mr. Postian:
I would like to thank you for taking the time to talk to me on April 16th
, 2013. As
an official representative of The Imperfect Harmony Objective, it was a pleasure to speak
to someone with similar priorities. The purpose of this grant proposal and the $8,000 we
are asking for is in line with the objectives of the Dove Real Beauty and the Unilever
United States Foundation.
Our aim is to stage a production of Eve Ensler’s award-winning play The Good
Body in San Francisco. The purpose of this production is to address the reality of
women’s issues with body image and social anxiety. We hope to produce information
packets detailing how to combat the negative impact of cultural pressures. They will have
data on Social Anxiety Disorders, Eating Disorders and organizations that can help,
including our own.
Through the use of our website and social media, we will keep track of those
we’ve met during this product to gauge our success and the interest in future productions
and projects.
Sincerely,
Leonard Joseph Dunham
Production Coordinator
2. Executive Summary
The Imperfect Harmony Objective (IMO) is asking for $9,000 for the purposes of
staging a production of Eve Ensler’s play, The Good Body in San Francisco. Featuring a
combined 50 years of theatrical experience, the board of directors of IMO is uniquely
qualified to bring this vision to life. Through the presentation of this show and
accompanying talkback sessions, coupled with information packets, we hope to raise
awareness of Social Anxiety issues and eating disorders such as Eating Disorder Not
Otherwise Specified (EDNOS). After a two week run at the black-box space of the
American Conservatory Theater (ACT), we will follow up on our patrons, utilizing our
website (www.imperfectharmony.org ) to track new logins and monitor comments.
Grant money for this project will be used to rent the rehearsal and performance
space, purchase materials for costumes and sets, and to pay the production crew and
actors involved. The success of this project will hopefully lead to future productions,
including original works inspired by this project.
3. The Imperfect Harmony Objective
The Imperfect Harmony Objective was founded by longtime friends and creative
partners, Jessica and Maile. Jessica has struggled with anorexia-like symptoms, while
Maile has suffered bouts with binge eating, and both struggle with social anxiety. While
each have unique issues that at times seem to contradict one another, over time they
discovered that sharing these issues with each other not only helped with the healing
process, but enhanced their friendship. They teamed up to create this organization as a
way to provide a hub for women and men to share their issues in order to receive
emotional support, an intensive list of resources and information, and share stories of
struggles and success. We also wanted to provide a place for people to go when they are
feeling alone, discouraged, or need to seek ideas on how to relax and treat themselves
with the love and respect that is so much deserved. At present The Imperfect Harmony
Objective is primarily focused on eating disorders, body image and relationships with
food. We hope to show that none of us are alone in our struggles, and that often it's the
imperfections that make us shine.
The Imperfect Harmony Objective will focus on people's issues in relation to their
self-esteem, bodies, relationships, and sexuality. Our objective is to allow women and
men the opportunity to open up about their flaws & body image struggles, and to show
that everyone is faced with issues of sense of self by educating people on a national level
how to help themselves and others deal with poor self-esteem/body image. We will work
not only to support those who wish to seek help for these issues, but will aim to create a
future filled with a positive sense of self for people of all ages and walks of life.
4. To further these goals, they have participated in events at UC Berkeley and the
Women’s Center of San Francisco.
A website (www.imperfectharmony.org) has been established to create a place for
discussion of body image issues. The website forums are a place to discuss not only
issues associated with eating disorders, but also dealing with stress; learning how to
relax; thoughts on exercise and activities; dealing with anxiety. Included are links to
health organizations and other public agencies. There is also a Blog where the girls share
their struggles and the struggles of others.
Future plans include staging theatrical productions relating to the above issues,
including works such as Eve Ensler’s The Good Body and original works created for the
organization.
5. Statement of Need
Most of us are familiar with the issues of eating disorders. We know about the
dangers of Anorexia, Bulimia and Obesity. We have seen the images of those who
obviously suffer from these aliments, to the point that they endanger their own health.
But, for every one of these obvious victims, there are countless others who suffer in
silence.
The Imperfect Harmony Objective was founded by two friends, Jessica & Maile.
Each has struggled with eating issues, in different ways. Maile is a secret binge eater and
Jessica has suffered with bouts of Anorexia. While neither has had severe enough
problems to threaten her health, it has negatively impacted their lives. Both fall under the
umbrella of EDNOS.
EDNOS is short for Eating Disorder Not Otherwise Specified. EDNOS is defined
in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual, Volume 4 (DSM-IV) for disorders of eating that
do not meet the criteria for any specific Eating Disorder. Examples include those showing
symptoms of anorexia, but remaining with the normal weight range, or Binge eating
without the vomiting associated with Bulimia.
Through open dialogue, The Imperfect Harmony Objective hopes to reach those
who might not be aware that others share in their difficulties.
6. Goals
To raise awareness of Eating Disorders Not Otherwise Specified and Social Anxiety
Disorder in the San Francisco and Orange County areas. We aim to create a public
conversation about these issues. To create a production company by which original works
dealing with these issues can be established.
Objectives
Increase the amount of traffic on the Imperfect Harmony Objective website, specifically
in the discussion Forums. Mount a full-scale theatrical production of Eve Ensler’s play,
The Good Body before the end of 2013. To use the publicity of the production to broaden
the conversation about Social Anxiety and Body Image issues. Distribute comment cards
and project literature via the playhouse.
Outcomes
Raise awareness of these conditions and the influences society and culture has on them.
We will track the comment cards via the website. The aim is to increase traffic on the
websites forums. Raise the users in the forums to at least one hundred people by the end
of 2013.
7. Methods
The intension of this proposal is for The Imperfect Harmony Objective to stage a
production of Eve Ensler’s play, The Good Body, at the black box space at the American
Conservatory Theater (or alternate location if necessary). Preliminary meetings with the
theater have already taken place.
From Eve Ensler’s own website, the play is described:
THE STORY: With THE GOOD BODY, Eve Ensler, author of The Vagina Monologues,
turns her unique eye to the rest of the female form. Whether undergoing Botox injections
or living beneath burqas, women of all cultures and backgrounds feel compelled to
change the way they look in order to fit in. THE GOOD BODY merges cross-cultural
explorations with Eve's own personal journey coming to terms with her "less-than-flat,
post-forties stomach."
The aim of this project is to bring to light the common fears and obstacles that all
women, and by some extension, all people share about their bodies and their self-images.
The evening will include not only the presentation of the play, but a talkback portion with
the actors and director where they will talk about the process of mounting such a show,
and a survey given to the audience to determine familiarity with the issues discussed.
Money secured would be used to:
Acquire performance rights ($75 a performance for 10 performances)
Pay for staffing, including:
Director
Stage Manager
Actors
Construction Crew
Lighting Designer
Light Board Operator
Sound Designer
Sound Board Operator
The selection of a director is a very important decision in a production such as
this one. We currently have a pool of candidates from the Orange County and San
Francisco areas, all award-winners, including IMO founder Maile Walker, herself a 20-
year veteran of the stage.
Materials required include
Lumber and hardware for set construction
Costuming pieces
Props (if any)
The set for this show should be a simple affair, a row of flats in the back with a
few platforms up front to give the actors a variety of levels to work with. Final design
will be decided by the director and set designer.
8. Timeline for this project
Finalizing a director for the show is the first priority. This will be conducted as
soon as financing is acquired.
Once a director is chosen, the crew will be hired. Set must be designed.
Set construction will take place as soon as the theater space is available.
Auditions will be held over two to three days in late July.
Rehearsals will start the following week and take place on weeknights for the next
six weeks, lasting from early August to the middle of September.
During the rehearsal process, our Board of Directors will be
Performance dates will run Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday
nights for two weeks.
After each Performance, the cast and crew will conduct the talkback portion,
moderated by our founders, Maile & Jessica. Comment cards and website information
will be given out at this time.
9. Evaluation
As this is a theatrical performance, our evaluation will be based on feedback from
the audience, as tracked by The Imperfect Harmony Objective website. We are interested
in what new information the audience members learned from the production. User
comments will be analyzed to determine what information audience members gathered
from the show and talkback, and what lingering questions they might have. Those who
provide contact information will be followed up on.
Data will be gathered by the IMO Webmaster, Garrett McDonald. Garrett is an
experienced webmaster and graphic designer, and is familiar with the ins and outs of
Internet protocols.
Once gathered, the data will be analyzed by a committee consisting of the
Imperfect Harmony Objective founders, Jessica McDonald and Maile Walker, and
members of the Board of Directors (still to be determined).
This data and its results will be used to determine the direction for future projects
and performance.
We hope to see web traffic, as denoted by individual page views, increase to 100
page views a day. Google Analytics will be used to collect this data, courtesy of Mr.
McDonald.
And with any theatrical productions, press reviews will be taken into
consideration to determine the success of the production.

11. Sustainability
There is a well-known adage in show business: “The Show Must Go On!” With
that belief deep in the hearts of our executive board, we have considered multiple options
for seeing this production come to life.
The rights contract for The Good Body allows for short portions (less than 10
minutes) to be performed without rights violation. We are prepared to stage snippets of
the show, featuring our Board members as actors and director, as a “Proof of Concept”
for the full staging. These mini-stagings could be performed in smaller venues, coffee
houses or even in potential donor’s living rooms. By this method we could take it on the
road, drawing attention for a full staging and raising needed funds incrementally.
Through the various theatrical backgrounds of our board, we have assembled a
list of possible smaller donors for a theatrical run. These individual donors have stated
they are willing to contribute if an Anchor Donor can be found to fund at least 50% of
needed funds.
Organizing fundraising events is an integral part of a life in the theater. As such,
our board has broad experience in staging such events. Several area theater companies
have reached out to us, offering their space and facilities for such events, including the
American Conservatory Theater (ACT), the Boxcar Theater, and Beach Blanket Babylon.
Past events have included theme dance parties (Disco Night and Prom Night among
them), musical revues, and Casino Nights.
While no one of these events would be sufficient to raise the needed funds, a
combination of any or all of the above could be the recipe for success.
