3. Benefit
• 400ZR enables the DCI application to happen without requiring
significant additional equipment (size, space, power, expense). The
inclusion of a DCI capability doesn't require much more equipment
and the network equipment diagrams collapse to something very
similar to a diagram that would be for internal DC links.
• Low cost 400ZR allows data centers to be distributed across a region,
providing more agility and scalability than the mega data center.

5. OIF 400ZR Objectives
• Standardized interface for:
• Short Reach (120 km or more) DWDM amplified links
• Unamplified loss limited links
• 400GBASE-R PHY Host/Client System Side Interface
• 60GBaud 16QAM Coherent Modulation (400G/λ)
• Form-factor agnostic. Target <15W pluggable DCO architecture with port
densities equivalent to grey client optics.
• Leverage other standards bodies work including IEEE 802.3 and ITU-T SG-15

8. OIF 400ZR Implementation
• Standard FEC implementation required
• Concatenated FEC (C-FEC) with a post-FEC error floor <1E-15
• Framing leverages 400GXS (Extender Sublayer) and simplified GMP
mapping
• 15W enabled by low power 7nm DSP
• Module form-factor agnostic, but extensions to the module management
interface software to support coherent modulation and/or DWDM.

9. OIF 400ZR Status
• Project start Nov 2016
• FEC decision Jul 2017. Initial ballot Aug 2018. Next ballot this quarter.
• Continued liaison activity with IEEE 802.3 and ITU-T SG-15.
• Initial 7nm DSP implementations “soon.”
• OIF Implementation Agreement - Coherent Module Management Interface
Specification, ready for ballot this quarter.
• Common Management Interface System (CMIS), used in QSFP-DD, OSFP, and COBO
has reserved register map for DWDM and coherent implementations.
