2. Introduction
• High risk children means “individuals who are at risk of
abuse, neglect, or have serious emotional, mental or
behavioral disturbances, reside in placements outside their
homes, or are involved in the juvenile justice system”.
• High risk children are defined as those whose family
experienced poverty, who grew up with teen mothers, or
who had contact with child welfare system.
3. Introduction
• Other high risk children are orphan and abandoned child,
children of single parenthood, migrated children, street
children, children from slum area, children with behavioral
problems, malnourished children, children with broken
home, poor family, children from socially deprived
community, high social risk, children with chronic illness and
disabilities.
• High risk children have a greater than average chance of
morbidity or mortality.
4. Following children are at high risk for long term
health problems:
• Preterm babies
• Low birth weight babies
• Small for gestational age
• Neonatal encephalopathy
• Term babies who received PPV for >24 hours
• Congenital brain and heart malformations, genetic
syndromes
5. Following children are at high risk for long
term health problems:
• Neonatal CNS infections ( meningitis, encephalitis).
• Infants requiring major surgery (brain, cardiac, abdominal,
thoracic).
• Hyperbilirubinemia (bilirubin encephalopathy)
• Neurobehavioral abnormalities noted in the newborn period
• Substance abuse by either parents
• Major psychiatric history in either parent
• Developmental disability in either parent.
