5. Purpose of this workshop
- Discover what the industry wants the law graduates
to do, and what they expect from teachers
- Build familiarity between industry and academia
- Develop a fresh new curriculum for the next big step
in legal academics
6. We are here to celebrate, acknowledge and have
conversations to deepen the contribution of a teacher
in a student’s career and future.
As a law teacher, each one of you
is the first point of contact, the
first mentor for a student, and
their window to the professional
world.
A teacher makes big
professional sacrifices to
contribute.
7. Are our students getting ready for the
industry? Are they getting what they come
to college for?
- Industry
viewpoint
- Let’s discover in
the next few days
- Student
viewpoint
- What is your
experience?
8. The contract drafting example
- I studied hard for contract law
- Scored the best marks in class
- But guess what? I still didn’t know how to
draft a contract
* There are many other examples as well
9. Why do you think this happens?
What could be the reasons?
10. What is the cost/ impact of this?
Students may show reduced
interest and commitments
towards studies, classes and
exams. They are prone to
distractions.
Teachers may also experience
dissatisfaction and lack of
fulfillment.
Are there any other costs/
impact that you can identify?
11. It is your program - own it
We are just facilitators, we do not have the
answers.
We are hoping to enable you to walk out with
amazing insights and a terrific curriculum.
12. What is the design of this program?
This is a 6 day-long program, from Monday to Saturday, from 11 am - 6.30
pm, featuring:
- The first step is to create the best syllabus you can imagine of the
subject you frequently or currently teach, or want to teach.
- Take only one subject.
- Over the next few days you will be interacting with law practitioners,
investors and other industry experts
- You will visit a top corporate law firm in Mumbai to understand the kind
of work that happens inside a law firm
- You will simply keep updating the syllabus and present the same at the
end.
- This final syllabus will be published online for the entire legal industry
to benefit from.
13. Flavour of conversations by experts
Primarily, conversations with practitioners will be grounded in certain key
perspectives:
- What industry (i.e. clients) expects from lawyers
- Knowledge and skill-gaps for freshers, areas of struggle
- Job requirements and expectations for specific kinds of lawyers
- Possible inclusions in teaching methodology and syllabi
- How can you give amazing career advice to your students
You will discover how you can incorporate these perspectives in your
teaching.
14. What concrete outcomes will you achieve at
the end of 6 days?
I. Immediate outcomes:
1) Develop a new syllabus for a subject you teach, which
incorporates practical insights
2) Present the syllabus to the other participants and publish it
online
I. Medium to long term results:
1) This method should impact students’ employability, their
eagerness to learn and attentiveness in class.
2) You can use this method for any other topics and subjects you
teach.
15. Participant introductions
Please share your name and tell us about your educational
background. Also share:
1. Areas of interest (with respect to law teaching)?

students, to the next level?

area of law?
1. What kind of contracts do they draft?
What other legal documents do they
draft?
19. 4. What disputes frequently arise in that
area of law?
5. What are the pain points of clients and
what kind of services do they gladly pay
for?
