5. Indus system
•It is the river from which the name of “India” is derived.
•Major parts is in Pakistan.
•Also called Sindu
•Originates near the viginity of famous Mansarovar lake in Himalayas (tibet).
•From tibet to hindu-kuch mountains moving south-west to pakistan and
draning into arabian sea near port city karachi .
•Total Length- 3202 km
•In india- 1114 km

6. Chenab- originates in upper himalayas then joins Uch Sharif (Indus) ,
Pakistan. Total length – 960 km, India- 431 km.
Jhelum - originates from Pir Pranjal in south-eastern part of kashmir
travels through kashmir valley and joins chenab in Punjab(Pakistan).
Total length- 725 km , in india – 221 km.
Ravi – is a transformy river of india and Pakistan , originates in Kangra
district of himachal pradesh , travels to join chenab . In india 258 km,
total length – 720 km. according to indus valley treaty the water of
Indus Valley Ravi belongs to india .
Sutlej –largest tributery of indus , origiates at Lake Rakshasthal (n
uttrakhand). Total length – 1529 km, in india – 657 km , shared by India
& Pakistan both.
Beas- smallest river originates at central Himachal Pradesh , flows
approx. 493 kms, joins sutlej (Punjab,India). Home to south –east asian
dolphins / indus dolphins.
7. Northern indian plains are in south of himalayas, level and flat, alluvial deposit lied
down by ganga ,brahmaputra and their tributeries.
South of northen plains lies peninsular plateau . Alluvial hills, one of the oldest border
on north west side . Vindhya and satpura are also important . Narmada & Tapi flows
west draning into Arabian sea. Western Ghats / sahyadris border the plateau .
Eastern Ghats provide the eastern boundary , while the Western Ghats are continous.
The eastern ghtas are brokern & uneven , rich in mineral like iron-ore , eastern coastal
plains are broader . The river Mahanandi, Godavari, Krishna and Kaveri drain in bay of
bengal .
Sunderban delta is formed where Ganga & Brahmaputra flows in bay of bengal.
The western ghats & eastern ghats lie in the coastal plains . The wertern coastal plains
are narrow.
The indus and its tributeries transverse Tibet , India and pakistan while the Ganga and
Brahmaputra and their tributarties cross Tibet , Nepal, Bhutan and Bangladesh.
