2. ELECTION
People choose their government through
general elections.
At State Level, representatives sit in the
State Legislative Assembly (Dewan Undangan
Negeri).
At Federal Level, elected members sit in the
Dewan Rakyat / member of the Parliament.
Elections are held within a period not
exceeding 5 years from previous election.
3. Two types of elections:
- General election
- By-election
Suruhanjaya Pilihan Raya (Election
Commission) is appointed to manage all
aspects of elections.
Task of SPR: ensures smooth conduct
of the democratic process.
SPR consists of:
- one chairman
- one deputy chairman
- three members (one of the members
must be from Sabah or Sarawak)

SPR responsibilities:
1. to gazette election boundaries
2. to register and prepare election list
3. to organize general and by-elections
4. to draw up election rules and regulations
5. to manage registration and nomination
of candidates
6. to count votes
7. to declare election results

At least 21 years old.
Not declared bankrupt/fined of RM2000 or
imprisoned for a period of one year
Malaysian
Registered on nomination day
VOTERS
At least 21 years old.
Registered voters
Resident of election constituency
Malaysian (not a prisoner)

As soon as Parliament is dissolved, the
election must be held within 60 days.
Election campaign can be held.
Period of campaigning: 7 – 15 days.
If any of the parties disagrees with
the result of the election: may contest
within 21 days.
