Medical Imagining Through Healthcare
When we come to think of it, choosing a career is by far one of the most difficult decisions an adult can make. For some, that decision is chosen for them, whether it’s a business that’s being passed down or through the influence of others around them. Up until my senior year of high school, I had no idea what I wanted to do for the rest of my life. That was until I took an anatomy class and a class called Independent Study Mentorship (ISM). In ISM, we were required to find a career of interest and a professional in the field who you would "shadow" once a week for the entire year. I knew I was good at math so the career I chose was accounting. For many reasons, such as finding it quite boring, I quickly realized that this wasn’t the career for me. In my anatomy class, however, I found a passion in the health industry. It was by far the most difficult class I've enrolled in however; it has also been the most exciting class I've ever taken. I remember looking forward to the class, even when studying for exams, as I would challenge myself to get above a 95. Since then, I knew I had found my passion in health. Through several hours of research, the career I am most interested in is Radiology. When I took the Myers Briggs Personality test on the Humanmetrics website (2020), I discovered that my personality type is ENTJ. People with this personality type are known to be driven to turn theories into plans, highly value knowledge, are future-oriented, and usually possess excellent verbal communication skills. People tend to have a lot of anxiety about taking x-rays. I will use my excellent verbal communication skills to put patients at ease about their x-rays. I believe all of my traits make me the perfect candidate for my career choice because they confirm that I am responsible enough to work in the medical field and will be skilled at anticipating the next step. Being organized is very helpful in any career path as well and will only serve to enhance my other qualities. I also believe my last trait of consistency might be the most important; treating everyone with the same level of care is the only way to ensure the best results for everyone who walks through those hospital doors, which ultimately leads to the most lives saved.
Job Responsibilities
A Radiologist is a medical professional who specializes in medical imaging to make a diagnosis. A radiologist main job responsibility is to comprehend and interpret diagnostic imagining which may include; CT scans (Computed tomography), MRI's (Magnetic resonance imaging), and ultrasounds (Career Coach, 2018). The main function of a CT scan is to create a 3-D image through the use of x-rays. An MRI, however, uses magnetic fields to create a more detailed image that show.

3. responsibility is to comprehend and interpret diagnostic
imagining which may include; CT scans (Computed
tomography), MRI's (Magnetic resonance imaging), and
ultrasounds (Career Coach, 2018). The main function of a CT
scan is to create a 3-D image through the use of x-rays. An
MRI, however, uses magnetic fields to create a more detailed
image that shows soft tissue, joint, tendons and ligaments.
Ultrasounds use sound waves to view the internal
structure/organs inside of the body (WebMD, 2018). According
to Occupational Outlook Handbook (2018), the expected
employment growth rate between 2016-2026 is 13%,
Occupational Outlook Handbook (2018), the expected
employment growth rate between 2016-2026 is 13%, and the
median wage of a physician is equal to or greater than $208,000
per year.
Education
To become a radiologist, not only will you need several years of
education, but it also takes several years of practice. According
to Occupational Outlook Handbook (2018), your first step is to
acquire a bachelor's degree from a university. This bachelor's
degree doesn’t necessarily have to be health related. You just
have to make sure you take the prerequisites the medical school
requires. During your last 2 years of college, you should begin
studying for the MCAT, which is an exam you have to take to
apply to medical school. Medical school consist of a total of 4
years in which the first two years you will be mostly learning
from lecture, while the last two you will begin medical
rotations. After medical school, you will need to take 4 years of
radiology residence and finally a 1-2 years fellowship (Bureau
of Labor Statistics, U.S. Department of Labor, 2018).
Lifestyle
The lifestyle I intend to live is one that'll allow me to support
my future family. I plan on having 1-2 children and according
to Texas Reality Check (2016), it'll cost about $2,162 every
month to support them. Because I plan on having a family, I
plan to live in a home that'll cost about $1,285 a month. Some
4. necessary expenses include: utilities, food, transportation,
clothing, health care, and student debt. These overall expenses
come out to about $2,429 a month. Which leaves personal care,
entertainment, miscellaneous, and savings, and that comes out
to $672 a month. In full, my monthly expenses come out to
$6,548, which gives me a total of $98,220 annual expenses. The
national annual salary of a physician is about $208,000 so
because of this, I should have enough money to maintain the
lifestyle I plan on living. The remaining balance will go towards
an emergency fund, retirement savings, college fund and
vacation.
Expected Expenses
When comparing the annual salary needed to maintain my future
lifestyle, I was taken back by the cost difference required to
live in different parts of the US. For example, in Houston TX, I
need about $100,000 a year. According to Cable News Network
(2018), to live in San Antonio, TX I need about $90,000 to
maintain the same lifestyle. This is due to the 1% decrease in
groceries, 26% decrease in housing, 21% decrease in utilities,
5% decrease in transportation, and 3% decrease in healthcare. I
chose San Antonio because before I moved to Houston, I lived
in San Antonio and I really enjoyed living there. However, if I
wanted to live in San Diego, CA, because of the beautiful
beaches and scenery, the cost of living dramatically increases to
about $150,000. This is due to the 32% increase in groceries,
127% increase in housing, 6% increase in utilities, 26% increase
in transportation, and 17% increase in healthcare. I have a lot of
my family living in New York so I was curious to see how much
it would cost me to live in Manhattan, NY. It would take about
$250,000 to live in New York. It absolutely blew my mind to
see that just the housing difference from Houston to New York
increases by 372%! Other contributing factors included the 59%
increase in groceries, 33% increase in transportation, and 26%
increase in healthcare. It was shocking to see how the cost of
living is so dependent on your geographic location.
Volunteering
5. Because I plan on pursuing a medical profession, volunteering
is a lot easier to find than other professions. When I looked on
VolunteerMatch (2018), I found over 91 opportunities near
Katy, TX. A majority only required skills on relationship
building, customer service, and community outreach. The three
that stood out to me the most were: Aromatherapy Program for
hospice patients, BINGO with patients of disabilities at Vita-
Living, and the Hospice plus internship, externship, and
practicum. Although I think Volunteer Match is very helpful, I
think it's more beneficial to go to the nearest hospital to you
and ask about volunteer opportunities. Because you are face to
face with the medical professions, it shows that you are
genuinely interested in not only learning more about the
medical professions but also that you're interested in helping
out the community. Strong medical school applicants also have
several hours of volunteer work on their resumes.
Long-term Goals
My long-term career goal is to become a medical professional,
but more specifically a Radiologist by 2032. It'll take me a total
of about 14 years to become a radiologist in which I will be
around 32. In order to make this dream into a reality, I will need
to work very hard. The first step I need to take is to complete
college with an excellent GPA. The second step is to study a lot
for the MCAT and be accepted into medical school. The last
step is to work hard in med. school and maintain a high GPA to
become a competitive applicant for residency. Once all of these
steps are complete, I should be well on my way to becoming a
radiologist. Now I completely understand that life may not
always go the way we plan, and I need to understand that it will
not be easy. But if this is something that makes me happy, then
I will work hard and in the end my efforts will all be worth it.
Some obstacles I may find myself having to overcome may
include time management issues, distractions, and
procrastination. To overcome these obstacles, I must remember
my goals and surround myself with positive people who support
me. My life will be everything I've pictured it to be when I not
6. only enjoy my job but also get to come home to my beautiful
family.

NURSING CAREER

Nursing Career
My name is Jessica Carmon, and I plan on becoming a
registered nurse. Ever since I was a little girl, I’ve always
enjoyed playing doctor with my toy dolls and pretending to help
them feel better. I also use to watch medical shows growing up,
so it introduced me to the medical field. It caught my interest,
8. and I told myself that becoming a nurse was what I was
supposed to do when I graduate high school. I took an
assessment online and it proved to me, that my top five
strengths are harmony, developer, restorative, futuristic, and
positivity (Clifton Strengths, 2019). My strengths will help me
through college, and throughout my whole career because I am
futuristic. It means that I constantly think about the future,
which will help guide me on becoming a registered nurse. I am
also restorative, and good at trying to find out what is wrong to
resolve the problem. To be able to have this as one of my best
strengths, my career as a registered nurse will be a passion of
mine for the rest of my life.
Job Responsibilities
Registered nurses make up to $71,730 a year nationally. The
employment of RN’S is predicted to grow twelve percent from
2018 to 2028 (The Bureau of Labor Statistics, 2019). This
means that it is much faster than the average for any
occupation. Finding a job as a nurse anywhere in the U.S, I am
going to be able to find a lot of openings for RN’s in my future.
Typically, nurses take care of their patients, and teaches their
patients or the general public, about varies health conditions.
They can work in clinics, hospitals, healthcare services, etc.
The required education to become a registered nurse can be an
associate’s degree in nursing, a Bachelor’s degree in nursing, or
a diploma from an approved nursing program. When I receive
my associates degree, I am capable of finding a job as a RN,
while trying to obtain my bachelor’s degree to better my
chances of finding a location I would like to work at. Other than
having a degree, nurses need to have a license in order to
interact with real patients.
Job Responsibilities in Houston
RN’s in Houston make $79,652 annually. Employment
Projections for nurses are increasing every year, until 2028
(Career Coach, 2019). RN’s in hospitals throughout Houston
maintain accurate patient’s records, information and vital signs.
They also prepare rooms for the doctors or surgeons, administer
9. the medications for patients if needed, monitor the patients for
any side effects, and report symptoms of the patients condition.
Besides patient care, they can also prepare sterile instruments
for a procedure or surgery. In order to become a registered
nurse, first you have to attend college, and receive an
Associate’s degree, and start off from there. You can also start
off with a bachelor’s degree (Career Coach, 2019). It is
necessary that nurses take the NCLEX exam and have a license
to work with patients.
Lifestyle
As stated in Texas Reality Check, I need to make $65,265
annually in order to live the lifestyle I desire in the future
(Texas Reality Check, 2019). I would like to live in a two-
bedroom apartment because it’s located near restaurants, stores
or highways. I would also like to have internet to stream movies
on my T.V or, hang out with my friends at the movies, and
going out for dinner after. The annual salary for registered
nurses is $79,911, which is more than the national average
(Texas Reality Check, 2019). This means that I would be able to
live the way I want to, in the future. In addition, I will have
extra funding left-over. What I want to do is save the extra
money for emergencies, or just use the money to help my mom
with anything she needs, just like she did for me.
Expected Expenses
Anyone not living in Houston, won’t understand how big of a
city we actually are. I was born and raised in Houston, and I
never left Texas before. I want to move to a different location to
explore new places, and see something new, so I would like to
move to another city that is a little less crowded, but in a city
that snows in the winters, and that isn’t extremely humid in the
summers. There are a couple cities in mind, but my top two
cities I would move to in a heartbeat, would be Hampton,
Virginia, Seattle, Washington or, Hampton snows every year,
and it is located near the beach when its summertime and the air
10. is warm, and sunny. In order for me to maintain the lifestyle I
want; I need to make at least $79,492 a year (CNN Money
Calculator, 2019). Housing is 1% more in Virginia meanwhile,
utilities are 7% less, transportation is 4% less and healthcare is
2% less. Groceries are around the same price, so there is not a
percentage. Sadly, I cannot say the same for Seattle,
Washington. It is way more expensive compared to Houston,
because housing is 146% more. Groceries are 46% more also. I
have to make $132,148 a year, in order to live comfortably in
Seattle, which means it is a $50,000 difference (CNN Money
Calculator). My career as a registered nurse depends on location
because my salary cannot be expandable. I would rather live in
Virginia, which is such a beautiful city, and is also affordable.
Volunteering
Because I started working when I was 15, I was able to
determine a few of my soft skills, which is teamwork,
adaptability, and communication skills. Volunteering at a
hospital to take care of sick babies, has been on my bucket list
for some time, volunteering at a veterinary clinic to help with
animals, and at a homeless shelter to help distribute food and
clothing are a few more things on my list I want to complete. As
I look online for open positions at any location in Houston that
are looking for volunteers, I found out that Ronald McDonald
Family room Volunteers at MD Anderson are looking for people
to help out the hospital staff with stocking up supplies, cleaning
rooms, and helping out in the kitchen with the parents and
children to provide support, and have a connection with the
families. Another open position is located at the Children’s
Memorial Hermann Hospital. We are supposed to help check in
with families who have sick children, and are being treated in
the ICU’s, making sure that it is clean, and stocked with
supplies, and baking goods for them to snack on when they are
hungry and aren’t able to leave the room( Volunteer Match,
2019). These opportunities that are available to me will allow
me to introduce myself with people that work at hospitals and
can further my chances of getting a job in the nursing field.
11. Long-Term Goals
Becoming a registered nurse and working at a hospital, is
my long-term career goal. I will be a RN by 2025. First I need
to attend college and take the required courses to earn a
Bachelor’s degree, next I need to take the NCLEX-RN in order
for me to qualify as an RN, and lastly I need to receive a license
from Texas to become a certified RN. Some of the obstacles I
will face is stress from studying, loud distractions, and keeping
my grades above a 95. To avoid these obstacles, I will find a
way to de-stress myself by drinking tea or taking a nap, finding
a location with no loud or visible distractions, such as a library
or an empty room and learning the best way to study my
homework to earn a good grade. Once I complete my long-term
career goal, I will feel proud of myself for working hard on
what I’ve been wanting to do since I was a kid. That feeling
will come once I see that I have my own apartment with my pet
dog, husband and child, favorite furniture and getting excited to
go to work.

Baptiste 1
Regina Baptiste
Dr. Koledoye
EDUC 1300
21 June 2019It’s Not Just a Career, it’s a Lifestyle
My name is Regina Baptiste and I am a second-year college
student pursuing a career in Diagnostic Medical Sonography.
Choosing a career is a very difficult decision that can seem
nerve racking and daunting. What if I pick the wrong path?
What if I am wasting my time? Many thoughts like these have
passed through my mind in the process of picking a career path.
I decided to become a diagnostic medical sonographer (DMS). I
have wanted to be in the healthcare field since I was a child and
my sister got diagnosed with childhood cancer. I want to be part
of the teams that help diagnose and cure people of life-
threatening conditions like the one she had. You have to be very
comfortable with people and be able to build relationships of
trust with patients. When I took The Clifton Strengths
13. Assessment for Students, my top trait was a relator, which
means I excel in developing relationships and I am able to make
people realize how much I care about them. My other four
strengths were arranger, meaning I am very organized,
deliberative, meaning I anticipate obstacles and am a good
decision maker, responsibility, meaning I take ownership of my
actions and am committed to my values, and lastly consistency,
which means I make a strong point to treat everyone equally and
thrive under routine behavior (Clifton). I believe all of my traits
make me the perfect candidate for my career choice because
they confirm that I am responsible enough to work in the
medical field and will be skilled at anticipating the next step.
Being organized is very helpful in any career path as well and
will only serve to enhance my other qualities. I also believe my
last trait of consistency might be the most important; treating
everyone with the same level of care is the only way to ensure
the best results for everyone who walks through those hospital
doors, which ultimately leads to the most lives saved.
Being a Diagnostic Medical Sonographers take ultrasounds of
patients in hospitals or private imaging centers to help
determine possible ailments, success of procedures, and results
of certain treatments for physicians to observe. Sonography
produces images of internal structures without using radiation
to assess the internal structures without an invasive approach.
This method is often used during pregnancy to view the
developing fetus (U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics). The duties
of a DMS require them to use specialized equipment to create
images and conduct tests on patients to help physicians assess
and diagnose medical issues (U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics).
When considering my future occupation, I obviously also had to
take my financial stability into account. For a DMS in the
United States, only a certification is technically required, but I
am pursuing a bachelor’s degree track. The information on the
Bureau of Labor Statistics website only showed the statistics for
an associate’s degree, so that is what I will be providing here.
The median salary in 2018 for this profession was $72,510 a
14. year with a job outlook of 17% increase, which is much higher
than the average increase (U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics).
Most DMS employed in Houston have either an associate’s
degree or a bachelor’s degree to stay competitive in the
workforce. The Houston area holds one of the top highest
employment areas for this occupation as well, employing over
1,500 individuals in this field in the Woodlands and Sugar Land
areas alone. The average pay in these areas is also higher than
the national average at $75,367 per year, according to the HCC
Career Coach tool, and can earn up to $97,000 per year with
further experience and qualifications (Diagnostic Medical). The
requirements for the job are the same in Houston as in other
areas, but the availability of work might be higher because
Houston is such a large medical center with people coming from
all across the country to be treated at facilities like MD
Anderson Cancer Center (U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics).
The average salary that I would need to achieve to sustain the
lifestyle I want according to my Texas Reality Check
assessment is $71,145 a year (Texas Reality Check). According
to the local statistics for the Houston areas presented in my
research, I should be able to easily reach that necessity (U.S.
Bureau of Labor Statistics). I plan to live comfortably but not
extravagantly. I do not need a lot of expensive things to be
happy, but I do intend to save a lot of money for the future and
travel whenever I can. Those were probably the two largest
expenses in my reality check assessment, but they are the things
I want to plan for the most. The job I am working toward
getting pays slightly higher than the national average, but even
at the national average of $72, 510 I would be able to live the
way I am hoping to live. If I end up excelling quickly in my
career and begin to make more money than the national or
Houston average, I would use my money to invest in rental
properties or improve the quality of my investments I already
own so that I can begin to accrue residual income. I plan to also
use my money to give back to my parents and family for helping
me achieve my goals throughout my life. One extravagant thing
15. I would buy would be a red ’69 Corvette for my dad because it
has always been his dream car, and if I could afford it, I would
buy one in a heartbeat for him.
Given my career choice, I will need to live in an area where
there is a larger amount of people who need healthcare
resources. This typically means bigger cities, like Houston. If I
ever decided to move cities, I would first want to move to
Seattle, Washington because it is my favorite city to visit. When
researching this move on the CNN Money Calculator, I can see
that I would need to make about $30,000 more per year to
maintain the same lifestyle (Cost of Living). That was a bit of a
hard pill to swallow. I saw that groceries were 46% more
expensive than in Houston and housing was a whopping 85%
more than in Houston. I also saw that the healthcare cost there
is 36% more. According to the Career One Stop tool, the
median salary in Seattle is $90,370. This rate increase would
help my financial position, but I would still have to adjust my
lifestyle to live comfortably. On the other side of the country, I
could live in Orlando, Florida. I would like to live in Florida for
just about the exact opposite reason for living in Seattle; it is
sunny, close to the beach, and it has very similar weather to
Houston. Florida has one of the largest medical centers in the
country and a lot of geriatrics because of the large retirement
community, so I would always have work. The median salary
for my profession would be slightly lower, at about $68,000 per
year but that is ok because the cost living for my comparable
salary would be only $68,002 (U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics).
My lifestyle would be very similar to the one I would be leading
in Houston, but I would spend more on groceries and less on
housing, transportation, and healthcare.
When considering how I can develop my attributes to be better
suited for the workforce, I think first of volunteering. I am
already involved in one avenue that I believe will help me to
develop the soft skills I will need for my job before developing
the hands-on skills I will learn from schooling I found on
volunteermatch.org. I currently volunteer at the MD Anderson
16. Cancer Center in the Houston medical center. In my
volunteering, I talk with patients and help them to decompress
after their appointments or de-stress before them. Cancer
treatment is a very stressful road to recovery that many people
have to walk alone. Even for those who aren’t alone, it is one of
the hardest tests life can throw at someone. I am learning how
to communicate with these patients and provide them with an
experience entirely independent of their treatment. I am there
learning how to be a positive force in their lives and how to
work with the staff in discrete and productive ways for the
whole team to prosper. When researching further volunteer
opportunities on Volunteer Match, I came across an opportunity
to volunteer at a camp for children with childhood cancer called
Camp One Step. This stuck out to me because, as I mentioned
before, my sister was diagnosed with childhood cancer. We
participated in a number of organizations like Camp One Step
during her treatment. These programs gave us the opportunity to
escape the hospitals, treatment rooms, and fear for a week or
two. I would be assigned 3-4 kids to be a counselor for during
the duration of the camp, and I would help them to feel like kids
again along with the help of the whole team at the camp. I
would gain skills with working with children through this
opportunity which would help me in my career because I hope
to specialize in working with children in the future. This would
also give me the opportunity to work with a team of people
working toward giving these children the time of their lives, and
I would gain organizational and interpersonal skills in working
toward making everything work for the best experience for the
kids (Volunteer Match).
Through my research, I have been able to come to a clear view
of my future plan. After being accepted and completing my
career training, I will enter the workforce as a diagnostic
medical sonographer specializing in childhood cardiac
sonography. I will achieve this goal by first achieving the best
grades I possibly can. I will also get as much volunteer and
preparatory experience in my career field as possible to develop
17. my soft skills in the next year before applying to have the best
chance of being accepted to the school of my choice. I will also
apply to a number of backup schools in case my first choice
does not work out so that I won’t be stuck with nowhere to go.
Once completing my technical schooling in five semesters, I
will take the examination to become certified for the specialty I
desire and ideally begin working in a children’s hospital after I
graduate. If I do not receive a position at a children’s hospital, I
will begin working at a general hospital first with my general
certification and continue to apply to positions at children’s
hospitals in Houston and possibly other cities across America. I
know I am capable of achieving this goal because it is what I’m
passionate about, and I have a steady plan for success. I plan to
reach this goal within the next five years. Once I have
completed this goal, I will continue to acquire further
certifications to become the most qualified in my field I can be
