Email header: story idea - interview with head of posh girls’ school association
on their new book on how to bring up girls
Hi Alice
Just wondering if you’d be interested in an interview with Gillian Low, the head
of the Girls School Association and head of Lady Eleanor Holles School in
Middlesex?
The GSA have just published a book on how to bring up girls. It’s quite an outspoken
organisation. You may remember a previous president Jill Berry causing a furore when
she said girls couldn’t have a career and a family. Another, Cynthia Hall, caused
controversy when she said girls in mixed schools could be held back by
domineering boys.
As well as talking to Gillian about how and why the book came into existence, we
could also publish extracts from the book - some of which are quite amusing e.g.
"If she is out with friends, always make sure that you see her on her return, and engage her in conversation. If
she smells of alcohol, or strongly of mints, or of a different perfume, then you are right to be suspicious."
"A minimum of three adults at a ratio of one adult to 10 teenagers should provide a good level of supervision
and sufficient cover if anything goes wrong.”
Let me know what you think

Story opportunity: invitation to shadow a child protection social worker for a day (exclusive
access)
Hi XXX
With the findings of the serious case review for the Baby X case due to be
published early next month, I was wondering if you’d be interested in letting one of your
writers spend the day with a child protection social worker, from the borough of x?
They would get unique access to the families our social worker is currently working with
(from a family being supported with a range of issues after experiencing domestic
abuse to a mother with a terminal disease we are helping make arrangements for
her son’s future care ). They would be able to talk frankly with both our social worker and
their clients about the issues they face (which will be particularly interesting, I think, given
the fact the serious case review is expected to find x.).
As I’m sure you can appreciate, due to the nature of their work, there may be some
sensitive issues about photography with some of our most vulnerable clients, but we’d be
happy to let a photographer accompany your reporter, as long as the subjects aren’t
identifiable.
Do let me know if you’d like to discuss the idea further…
