17. How To Introduce Yourself In An
Interview: Key Points
1. Self Introduction in Interview
Dress Appropriately
Prepare What To Say
Begin By Greeting the Interviewer
Include Your Educational Qualifications
Elaborate on Professional Experience (if any)
Mention Your Hobbies And Interests
Be Prepared For Follow Up Questions
19. Dress Appropriately
Appearance plays an important role when meeting someone new. Choosing what
to wear to an interview will represent, in part, who you are to those you’ll be
meeting. Different offices have different dress codes, so you’ll want to do some
research on the company culture before you go to your job interview. For example,
a financial consultant interview will likely require a more formal dress than that of a
tech start-up. If you’re unsure, reach out to your recruiter or office contact
beforehand and ask. This shows that you’re paying attention to the details and
care about making the right impression.
20. Dress Appropriately
Here are a few tips:
Be yourself. What you wear is a part of who you are, so use it to communicate your
personality where appropriate.
Keep the focus on you. Try and avoid distracting visuals like extravagant jewelry or
busy prints to ensure your interviewers pay attention to your conversation.
Be comfortable. Being professional doesn’t mean you have to be uncomfortable—make
sure you’re feeling good in your clothes when you leave the house..

26. During the Interview
Let us discuss some general tips on how to give a good self-introduction.
Wear a smile when you go for an interview. A smile adds up to your
confidence and balances your body language. You also come across as a
friendly person.
A simple ‘hello’ can showcase your etiquettes.
Inform the concerned person or at the reception of your arrival. You should
give a proper introduction about yourself.
It is important that you avoid distractions and maintain eye contact while
talking. The idea of self-introduction is not just limited to get to know about the
candidate.
Always prepare your self-introduction according to the job profile you are
giving the interview for. It gives you confidence and leaves a good impression
on your interviewers. This preparation also helps you to keep your
introduction concise, and you do not end up giving irrelevant information.
27. During the Interview
Since the introduction is only the beginning aspect of an interview,
you will also be asked questions related to your resume as well as
how you can fulfill the requirements of the job profile.
After answering questions of the interviewer, you can also ask
questions of your own to show your interest in the profile as well
as the company.
Make sure that you have researched well as well as prepared for
different types of questions beforehand.
28. During the Interview
Take a pause whenever needed and remember to breathe.
Pausing to collect your thoughts is completely fine as you can take
a moment to reflect on what has been asked and then answer
confidently.
Whenever you feel like you need a moment to think about the
question, you can say, “let me think about that” rather than
stuttering as it can cause a negative impact.
Make mental notes throughout the interview on how you can
improve yourself and which aspects you need to focus more on.
29. After the Interview
• Once the interview has come to an end, stand up and shake the
hand of the interviewer and thank them for the interview with a
smile.
• Ending the interview on a positive note is also important and you
can use a phrase like, “It was a pleasure meeting you. Have a
great day.”
30. Additional Tips
Here are some additional tips on acing your personal interview from the introduction to ending it
on a positive note:
• Research thoroughly about the company and go through the key skills and qualifications mentioned in
the job description and required by the job profile you are interviewing for.
• Prepare beforehand for the different introductory questions especially the aspects that we have mentioned
above, from giving an overview of your candidature to your educational qualifications, professional experiences,
hobbies and interests.
• Keep a check on your body language throughout the interview. Make sure that you are not slouching but
straighten up your shoulders, raise your chin and sit straight. You can practice this by doing a mock interview with
a friend and seek feedback on how it can be improved.
• Avoid distractions and maintain eye contact with the interviewer but don’t overdo it.
31. Things to Avoid during Self-
Introduction
Here are a few don’ts to take care of when giving a self-introduction.
Do not simply narrate the content of your resume and cover letter. Make
it sound authentic by providing examples.
Do not ask ‘what do you want to know?’. It shows that you are not
prepared.
Do not narrate life stories. Just touch upon an experience if you want to
highlight any specific quality.
Do not consume a lot of time giving your self-introduction.
