- At Second Glance I created this exercise to help cadets focus on deeper issues that can be hidden from sight when they initially respond to a call for service, and realize things aren’t always what they appear to be. Start by making groups of 4 to 6 students and give them the following list of people to rank. Number 1 will be the person they find the most reprehensible and 5 will be the least. Give the groups 10 minutes to discuss the individuals and rank each one.
- After 10 minutes have each team explain how they determined who was the worst of the group and why. Have them explain each one of their choices and the justification. After each group has a chance to explain their choices show them the list again At Second Glance.

- Ask the class if they would like to keep their same order with the new information they’ve learned. Give them another 10 minutes to re-organize their list of people. 257 Ask each group what changed from the first time they listed the group? The information wasn’t false just incomplete. Let them know the information will always be incomplete if they fail to ask the right questions and build rapport with people. The activity does a good job of catching your audience off guard, and giving them a small glimpse into the realities of police work where things are always changing.
