Plagiarism and Consequences
1
RMIT Classification: Trusted
SBM - Plagiarism and Consequences
Plagiarism is a form of cheating in
assessment. It is the presentation of the
work, idea or creation of another person,
without appropriate referencing, as
though it is your own. Plagiarism may
occur in oral, written or visual
presentations.
If you upload an assignment to an
assignment site, facebook or
share in any media - and it is
copied - you are culpable
Sharing your work with a friend would
be identified through Turnitin, both
you/your friend would be required to
attend a plagiarism hearing
RMIT employs sophisticated
forensic methods to detect
plagiarism. Your work will be
screened in this approach
Whether 4/5 years ago,
across continents, through
the web, from your course,
the Forensic methods will
detect plagiarism, oral,
written or visual.
Referencing appropriately
can be your best friend,
however if this is done
badly, or omitted,
suspicions are raised and
this could lead to a
Forensic investigation
Plagiarism hearings are designed to establish the truth of authorship of assessment work, where either accidental
or deliberate plagiarism is established. There are penalties for deliberate plagiarism based upon first or repeat
breaches of academic integrity. The penalties can range from reduction in the assessment mark, zero for
assessment mark, zero for the whole course, suspension of studies. Breaches are placed on your student record.
