Log shipping configuration for SQL SERVER

1. Login to the serverSQLServermanagement studioidentify thesource Db from the list to configure log
shipping. In our case we picked “AA_SURVEY_BACKUP_2016” DB.
2. Right click on theidentifiedDB & click on option properties This option will display all the selected DB
properties.
3. On left hand side of window one must see 9 options. Please click on options (4th
option) to ensure that recovery model
is full to avoid any further issues!

4. In our case, we are using recovery model option. Now, click on transaction log shipping
(option 9). Click the check box to enable this as a primary DB.
5. As we are going to configure backups/Logs at different location, please remove from local disk/s from maintenance
plan option.
6. Right click & click on EDIT option

7. Now, uncheck the box in front of a DB name which will undergo log shippingconfiguration & click OK
8. Now click on backup settings to configure transactional log backup settings
9. Now in this window, mention the network path and backup location on primary box. Depends on requirement specify
delete files timelines & mention by what time alert should reach us in case of no backup occur.
9a) Also, set backup compression. Click on OK.

10. Now, once clicked on OK primary database configuration is done. Now let us configure secondary database. Click on
ADD option
11. In secondary database settings window, click on connect. What is means? From the primary DB we shouldbe able
connect to secondary DB for further configuration

12. Once clicked on connect, one should be able to see authentication window to connect to target. In our case, it is DR
box.
13. Once authenticated, one should be able to see below window with secondary database name. Here we can see three tabs
13a) initialize secondary database
13b) copy files
13c) Restore transactional logs
Let us see each tab
13a) initializesecondary database: Ensure log shippingDB details are correct & click on first radio button. Then
click on restore options and provide thepath

13b) Copy files – mention destination path & also provide by when copied files can be deleted (duration)
13c) Click on NO recovery mode radio button, delay restoring backup duration & provideduration by which system
should alert us ‘IF’ no restoreoccurs within X minutes/hours/days & click OK
14. Now, we all set with configuration. Click on OK to start the process!

15. Here are the Internally steps, process will backup primary DB then restore it to secondary DB. Once done then it will
save the configuration done.
16. If all success, we will see below window which means we are good with configuration. However, go to target location
and check the status of the DBs configured. They status will be under restoring stage.
