2. PRINT MEDIA
Print media is one of the oldest
and basic forms of mass
communication.
It includes newspapers, weeklies,
magazines, monthlies and other
forms of printed journals.
A basic understanding of the print
media is essential in the study of
mass communication.
3. History of Printing
The Chinese were the first to invent the
art of printing.
The oldest known surviving printed work
in a woodblock is a Buddhist scripture
of 684 AD
Have you seen a palm leaf? Some of the
old manuscripts written on palm
leaves are preserved in our National
Manuscript Library in Delhi.
4. Advent of Modern Technology
Technological revolution has modernized the print
media. For a long time, these were produced by
hand composing. Later, these were replaced by
monotype and linotype. In this process, a machine
operated by a keyboard was used to compose
letters. This has also become obsolete now.
Typesetting in computers, offset printing and laser
printing have taken over. Desktop publishing has
become quite common now
5. Newspapers
Print media generally refers to newspapers.
Newspapers collect, edit and print news reports
and articles. There are newspapers published
in the evening also. They are called eveningers
6. Magazine
It is a periodical publication containing a variety
of articles, generally financed by advertising,
purchased by readers, or both.
The word “Magazines” refers to a collection or
storage location. It is much more colourful than
newspaper.
Their purpose is exactly same as that of
newspaper, to inform, entertain and
persuade the public as well as to offer a
means for targeting advertising.
7. Weeklies
A newspaper or periodical issued every week.
Outdoor Billboards
A large outdoor advertising structure typically found in high-traffic areas such as alongside busy roads.
Billboards present large advertisements to passing pedestrians and drivers.
Transit Posters
Posters attached to the exterior of buses. Common displays are king panels, queen panels and tail
panels. Queen panels are on the curb side of the bus
Yellow Pages
The yellow pages are any telephone directory of businesses, organized by category rather than
alphabetically by business name, and in which advertising is sold. The directories were originally printed
on yellow paper, as opposed to white pages for non-commercial listings.
Direct Mail
Direct mail is marketing material or product mailed directly to the homes of consumers or offices of
business buyers. Examples include postcards with an offer, catalogs that display goods, coupons,
solicitation letters from nonprofits or free samples sent by businesses.
