3. Hello MSW/BSW Intern,
Congratulations on your internship placement with Thomas and Son Family and Child
Resource Center, Inc. This is a rewarding opportunity that will enrich you academically,
professionally, and personally. As an intern you will be exposed to various clients with an
array of strengths and needs. It is essential to understand and value the intricacies
associated in working with children and families that are experiencing stressors and/or
traumatic events.
Therefore, this resource guide serves as a brief synopsis of what to expect during your
time with Thomas and Son. The goal is for you to not only recognize how to perform a
particular task but to also understand the behavior occurring with a client(s). Your acquisition
of a professional degree in social work requires you to go beyond the superficial level of
simply being present but also formulating a professional opinion on a particular case.
4. It is important to adhere to the agency procedures and policies that are presented to you,
but as an intern you too offer a wealth of knowledge that can enhance the agency. Your
cases are all unique in their own way, regardless of the similarities that may be present in
them.
Your internship with Thomas and Son will truly be an investment of time and
commitment that will prepare you on your professional journey. I hope your field experience
with the agency creates a lasting impression that will mold you into a passionate, competent
and empowering social practitioner.
Warmest regards,
Kierra Allen

7. Art Therapy
Art therapy is a wonderful method of understanding what children have
experienced at home and/or other environments. The utilization of
drawings are very pertinent in assessing children.
Therapist Aid
Therapist Aid is a wonderful resource for interviewing, applying theory,
utilizing interventions and educating the client and yourself. The use of
social work content is more obvious on the site, but it is important to not be
dependent on the site’s reasoning for the tools provided. You must review
literature and research on these techniques and practices to ensure you are
utilizing the most appropriate method with your client.
GED Testing
There may be clients who would like to obtain their GED. This is a resource
that enables the client or someone else to purchase a voucher for the client
interested in the testing. The voucher is valid for one year.

10. TIPS
Take care of yourself Ask questions. Time management is your ally.
You cannot provide help to
your client(s) if you are
imbalanced. The assessment
does not stop with your
client.
There is nothing wrong with
inquiry. Not asking questions
could be more damaging to
not only you but also your
client.
The more efficient you utilize
your time the easier you can
handle the responsibilities of
school, internship and other
life commitments.
11. TIPS
No case is the same.
Every client has a
strength.
Understand your client's needs.
Overlap will happen, and
similarities will exist. You must
understand that the cookie
cutter approach will not be
beneficial to your client(s).
Recognizing and
acknowledging the
strengths of your client
may be the difference in
the progress you make
with your client.
If your client has an addiction,
you need to understand how
that will impact their ability to
parent or even follow their
case plan.
12. TIPS
Present yourself as a learner. You get what you give.
Social work is a profession
that constantly requires us to
assess and evaluate our
practice methods. Learners
are invested in acquiring
knowledge that can serve not
only themselves but other
people.
Your internship is what you
choose to make of it. Mediocrity
will not be acceptable in this
agency--actually at any agency.
This is a life changing
experience. If you are not
learning, you are not working.
