Research Question
• Does poverty have a correlation to asthma?
Why is this research important?
• There is no cure for asthma and it can only be
managed
• Failure to control a person’s asthma can lead to
death
• Nine people in the United States die from
asthma every day
• Asthma costs the United States healthcare
system $56 Billion a year
• Asthma costs California $1 Billion a year
• Almost 25 Million people in the United States
have asthma
• 7 million of those people are children
• Children are the most susceptible to asthma
attacks
What is Asthma?
• A disease that affects the lungs
• Airways become inflamed, making it hard to breathe.
Symptoms Include
▫ Wheezing
▫ Breathlessness
▫ Chest tightness
▫ Nighttime or early morning coughing
Common Asthma Triggers
• Smoke
▫ Secondhand tobacco
▫ Air pollution
▫ Burning wood or grass
• Allergens
▫ Pollen, mold, animal dander, dust mites and
perfume
• Physical Activity
• Stress
