Man is the only
animal who had
adapted to every
climatic condition and
environment on earth.
There are very few
places on earth
untouched by man.
2. MORE THAN 90 PERCENT OF THE
WORLD’S POPULATION LIVES IN
ABOUT 10 PERCENT OF LAND
SURFACE.
THERE ARE SOME PHYSICAL
AND CULTURAL FACTORS THAT
AFFECT DISTRIBUTION OF
POPULATION.
THE PHYSICAL ENVIRONMENT
PLAYS A VITAL ROLE IN
DETERMINING THE
DISTRIBUTION OF POPULATION.
3. CLIMATE
• Climate influences agriculture, natural
vegetation and industrial development.
• Temperate regions with moderate
climatic conditions are favored for
human settlement.
• Most of the developed countries like
USA and UK lie in this region.
4. ON THE OTHER HAND VERY LESS POPULATION IN AREAS OF EXTREME
CLIMATE
5. TOPOGRAPHY
• Mountains – has less
scope for economic
activities.
• Plateaus - mining attracts
industries and in some
cases agriculture can be
carried.
• Plains – preferable from
ancient civilizations with
high density of
population.
6. SOIL
• Soil is important for agriculture.
• Fertile soil regions are densely
populated.
• E.g. Gangetic plain
7. WATER
• Adequate water supply
develops agriculture and
industries.
• Areas near river and lake are
densely populated.
8. AVAILABILITY OF RESOURCES
Minerals and power resources leads to industrial development which attracts more
people due to employment opportunities.
9. SIZE OF A
COUNTRY
• A country with a large land area may
not be overpopulated even if the
population increases.
• While a slight increase of population in
a small country makes it a densely
populated region.
10. SOCIO – ECONOMIC FACTORS
• Economic factors such as agriculture and industries influence people. Eg. Mumbai
• Cultural factors such as education and religion also influence people.
11. GEOGRAPHICAL LOCATION
• A country with favorable geographical location accessible from other parts of the
world, becomes trade center.
• E.g. Singapore and Mumbai
