1960: The chairman of Barnes & Noble Leonard Riggio began his book selling
career while he was attending New York University.
1965: Mr. Riggio received a small investment and started the Student Book
Exchange (SBX).
1970: Riggio’s business included six other college bookstores and acquired the
flagship Barnes & Noble’s trade name and flag ship in Manhattan.
1974: Barnes & Noble was the first bookseller in America to advertise on
television in the year.

bookseller in America to discount books by offering New York Times
bestsellers at 40% off publishers’ list prices in.
1993: B&N became a publicly traded company.
