LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT
!
Dear Brothers of Beta Upsilon:

!Firstly, thank you all once again for your support and hard work throughout this past semester. This chapter
to me is an avenue in which the most important aspects of my life are all interconnected.  It is the entity that
drives and facilitates my passion to succeed while encouraging those around me to follow suit.  Beta Upsilon
leaves its footprint on more than just the business school; it ultimately has a direct impact on the future
leaders of the professional realm. You are the reason why we are known as “the premier developer of
principled business leaders,” and it is your combined efforts that make our chapter great.

!As you all know, success does not come easy, and this was evident towards the beginning of the semester.
We were faced with a variety of challenges, or shall we call them “opportunities”, that existed within the
chapter. Disengagement from the chapter, lack of accountability within committees, and just an overall
absence of unity hindered our progress. We are growing very quickly as a chapter, and the growing pains
were beginning to surface as the new semester began.

!But with these opportunities came an avenue for us to all learn, lead, and grow together. We will improve on
our downfalls and work together to move this chapter forward. At the very beginning of the semester I
challenged you to pursue your passion whether it be within the chapter or external. My goal was to empower
you, give you the tools you needed to achieve your goals and objectives, which lead to the creation of a new
executive board position, the VP of Risk Management.

!The creation of a new executive board position was just one of the extraordinary feats that Beta Upsilon has
accomplished over the semester. We hosted our very first Professionalism Expo while Propensity was
expanded tremendously, both giving us incredible exposure throughout campus and within the community.
Not to mention we welcomed 19 remarkable new brothers all filled with limitless potential. These are just a
few highlights of our recent semester, and believe me when I say we have left our mark.

!Let’s continue to improve next semester, get excited for what’s in store for us as we prepare to conclude the
year. Look forward to more signature events, and remember my challenge to you. We will continue to make
our presence known around the community and ultimately at the University of South Carolina!

!My hope is that you will take on my challenge, and go do whatever it is that you are passionate about. The
theme for this semester and next semester is “empowerment”. You should not need a title or an executive
position to feel empowered; here at Beta Upsilon we are all one unit. We will work together to achieve
greatness and do whatever it takes to help one another. If it is something outside of the chapter that passions
you, then by all means take initiative, just know that you have an entire brotherhood behind you along the way.
I believe that if you do this, you will not only be preparing yourself for your career, but more importantly you
will prepare yourself for life’s great trials.

!In unity,

!Kent

PERFORMANCE REVIEW: FALL 2013
LETTER FROM THE EXECUTIVE VICE PRESIDENT
!
Dear Brothers of Beta Upsilon,
!I cannot believe another semester is over and half of my time serving as your Executive Vice President has
passed. I didn’t know what to expect returning from my semester abroad. I anticipated feeling uncomfortable
returning to the brotherhood after experiencing such personal growth and change after being away so long.
But from the moment I stepped into the first chapter meeting I was reminded that this chapter will always feel
like home to me and my heart will always belong with each of you, my family.

!Alpha Kappa Psi went through some major changes this semester. I am so proud to be on an Executive Board
that has been so cohesive, progressive, and innovative. A few notable accomplishments that stick out in my
mind were the first university-wide Professionalism Expo, the creation of the Vice President of Risk
Management executive board position, and the separation of Vice President of Membership & Pledge
Educator. We also identified major pain points within the Fraternity: brother apathy, brother retention,
participation – and tackled them head on by empowering individual brothers to accomplish their goals,
practicing diligent transparency, and remaining available & approachable to our chapter.

!Executive Vice President has always been a position with undefined responsibilities and (as we learned this
semester) one that does not actually exist in our bylaws. I took this opportunity to build and shape the
leadership position. One of my major goals was to make chapter more fun to attend so I restructured
committee reports by adding in fun facts about executive board members, encouraging VPs to make their
reports interesting, creating a brother spotlight presentation, and bringing back weekly current events
presentations. A part of motivation to come to chapter is the promise that it will be concise so I eliminated gap
time during chapter by consolidating the PowerPoints ahead of time each week.

!As my time as a brother in this chapter comes to an end next semester I hope to finish strong as a member of
the executive board by helping all of the Vice Presidents to achieve the goals they have set for themselves so
that they may leave a legacy each of them is proud of. I continue to enjoy watching the Fraternity evolve with
each new pledge class and each new idea that is brought to the table. Every day brings new challenges and I
appreciate that they keep life interesting.

PERFORMANCE REVIEW: FALL 2013
LETTER FROM THE VP OF ADMINISTRATION
!
Brothers,
!Joining the executive board for our Beta Upsilon chapter has its challenging moments but nothing has been
more rewarding since coming to USC. Compared to executive boards from before, I felt like our officers as a
whole were extremely approachable. It was nice to see younger brothers step up this semester and voice their
opinions or concerns with certain topics regarding the brotherhood. I think we have all made small steps in
building our brotherhood and growing even more past our potential. There are so many unique and talented
people in the Beta Upsilon chapter and I truly believe each of our members will do great things after
graduation.

!The biggest challenge of the semester for the VP of Administration position was dealing with LOA requests or
already LOA brothers. Since my position started in the fall, it was hard to organize who was LOA or wanted to
go LOA coming back from the summer. There were emails from brothers from a number of months back
stating they would be LOA and at first I completely overlooked the email. It was also a little challenging
deciding who could actually be LOA or not, since member retention was something the executive board
wanted to focus on this semester. After being here all fall, it will definitely be a lot easier handling requests for
next semester since I am very up to date with emails. One vision I have for next semester is creating a Google
calendar to keep updated with events and important dates so the brotherhood can have that information in
advance, rather than the week of. I feel like a chapter wide calendar will help with member participation for
professionalism or other such events and overall boost chapter morale if more brothers are at these events.

!Next semester will be my last at Carolina, along with a handful of other officers for our Beta Upsilon chapter. I
know I am not alone when I say I am sincerely going to miss each and every one of my brothers, along with
the memories created and lessons taught because of joining Alpha Kappa Psi. I have no doubt our
brotherhood will continue to grow each year and I cannot wait to see what the future brothers and executive
board will set out to accomplish.

PERFORMANCE REVIEW: FALL 2013
LETTER FROM THE VP OF PROFESSIONALISM
Dear Brothers of Alpha Kappa Psi Beta Upsilon,
It is has been a semester of transition; not only for the new executive board members taking over, but a shift in the
needs of the brotherhood. As a whole, you challenged me to desire greatness within the professional development
of our members. I hope the Professionalism Committee was able to meet your expectations. Without the support
and hard work from each member of the Professionalism Committee, The Final Inquisition, Professionalism Expo,
Pledge Training Workshop, Public Speaking Workshop, Propensity, guest speakers and various other professional
development activities would not have been possible. Professionalism Committee, thank you for your dedication to
developing this brotherhood.

I know I am supposed to talk about failures and successes seen in these events. The undeniable fact is all of the
events hosted have room for improvement and should be improved. More importantly, I wanted to share with you
my goal for this past semester. My goal was to get everyone involved and working together, within my committee,
the executive board, and the entire brotherhood. Many committee members took on a specific event to plan and
execute, and were able to grow as leaders – that was a success. Different committees were encouraged to work
with Professional Development, such as Marketing, Service, and Alumni Relations, which I would also consider
partly successful. This goal also meant offering events that would encourage the entire brotherhood to get involved
and support fraternity efforts – and, unfortunately, that was a failure.

I have spent hours thinking about what more I could have done with my time to provide more opportunities to
members. There is more I could have done, and different outlets I could have explored. But, I also realize that there
is a limit to what can be accomplished on my end. So, this is where I offer my advice:

The executive board and active members can provide many developmental programs and opportunities;
however, brothers must be receptive and supportive of these efforts. The entire brotherhood needs to be
fully behind events and other experiences planned on behalf of Alpha Kappa Psi. It is your responsibility as
members of this fraternity to advocate for your ideas, give support and help to others’ ideas, and
participate in their execution. You will get out of this fraternity, what you decide to put in.

Further, treat this organization like a business. It is the most beneficial experience you will have in college if
you do this. Would you miss a meeting with your boss and not submit assignments on time? No. So do
not miss committee meetings and follow through with what you promise. Learn how to navigate through
the structure of the organization and make necessary changes when you see the need. Practice how to
present your thoughts and feedback without hurting the relationships you have built. Impress your peers
and realize these will be the networks you utilize throughout your career. Be someone that Alpha Kappa Psi
– your business – is proud to say you are a part of.

I told you all at the beginning of the semester to “be the change you want to see” in the fraternity. This brotherhood
is full of motivated, intelligent people who have the potential to make a difference within the organization and the
world. Hold yourself to higher standards and meet the expectations you set for yourself. Even if you fail, you will
become a better person than you are today. I believe in all of you and wish you the best of luck in future endeavors.

With all my love, integrity, and unity,

Megan Frank

PERFORMANCE REVIEW: FALL 2013
LETTER FROM THE VP OF MARKETING
!
Brothers of the Alpha Kappa Psi Beta Upsilon Chapter,
!This semester on the executive board has been one of the greatest learning experiences I’ve had thus far.
Being VP of Marketing has proven to be both rewarding and challenging, primarily due to the fact that you are
never done selling your organization. It’s a continuous effort and that has been one of the most interesting
parts about this position.

!Due to the tight-knit nature of our executive board, it was extremely beneficial to receive their honest
feedback on all tasks that our committee was developing. The support I received for the “Suit Up” marketing
campaign for rush was encouraging and permeated throughout the semester. We made great use of social
media this semester as a tool to show others the wide array of events we are involved in. I created an
Instagram account in early August to increase our photo sharing with both chapters across the nation as well
as students on campus.

!I would say that the main thing I hope to improve upon next semester is both more effective utilization of my
committee members as well as an increase in collaboration with them earlier on in the semester to ensure that
they are engaged in the tasks they are involved in. On the other hand, various members were crucial in the
promotion of Rush and the Professionalism Expo. I also feel as though I know exponentially more about what
marketing techniques work on a campus environment, as well as the amount of time it takes to effectively
market ourselves, before rush specifically.

!Taking into account the invaluable lessons I have learned over the past 5 months, there are many
opportunities that I plan to take full advantage of next semester. The biggest initiative that I plan to leave
behind upon graduation is a recruitment video to be used as a major marketing tool over the next 3-5 years.
The goal of this video is to visually capture what Alpha Kappa Psi means to each and every one of you
brothers, and share that with students at this university who don’t know what they’re missing. In addition, the
video will highlight the diverse nature of our organization through the use of all of our different languages
spoken.

!Lastly, and perhaps most importantly, I plan on fully incorporating the newly elected VP of Marketing
throughout the semester. This will eliminate a great amount of the catching up that takes place in the
beginning of her term and allow her to focus on her major goals for the semester right off the bat. I look
forward to my final semester in Alpha Kappa Psi and hope to make a lasting impression when I am no longer
serving on the executive board. I thank you all for your hard work and look forward to serving this organization
next semester to the best of my ability.

LETTER FROM THE VP OF ALUMNI RELATIONS
!
Dear Brotherhood,

!I would start off by thanking you for an excellent semester. Many things have happened that I feel have
strengthened the bond between all of us. From the craziness of Mountain Weekend to the induction of
another great pledge class, we have accomplished great things this semester.

!As the VP of Alumni Relations for this past semester, I have learned a great deal. Hopefully, you feel as if I
have done a great job in providing you all with the access and opportunity to meet and interact with the
current alumni base. One of my biggest successes has to be the “Alumni Weekend” that was orchestrated by
the alumni relations committee. Carolina did their part as well, beating Florida 19-14! This was the first
semester in which we had a weekend-long alumni event, and I feel as if it was a great success. With over
fifteen alumni at the tailgate and five alumni at the following chapter to answer questions, I believe this event
was an excellent chance to meet some important alumni.

!As much as my committee and I did this semester, there is an area in which I would like to improve upon for
the upcoming semester. I am going to try and get the alumni database filled out with up to date information
and release this content to the entire brotherhood. Former brother Kevin Christner started this database, and
I hope that we can finish it for the brotherhood’s benefit.

!This semester has been a blast, and coupled with the fact that Carolina is 10-2 (and beat Clemson for the 5th
straight time!), I would say that everyone has had a great start to the 2013-2014 school year. I hope everyone
enjoys their time off from school, and returns to Carolina and Alpha Kappa Psi with a resurgence of energy.

LETTER FROM THE VP OF FINANCE
!
Dear Brothers of the Beta Upsilon Chapter,
It is truly shocking to me that this semester is already coming to a close. It feels like only yesterday that we
were sitting down at our first chapter and talking about rush. My position as the VP of Finance has kept me
busy to say the least. Through the execution of my duties I have learned much about myself and increasingly
more about this fraternity and its members.

Throughout this semester I have done much to serve you all. The first duty and perhaps the most challenging
was collecting dues. I hope that in the future we can work together to get them collected in a more timely and
efficient manner. Another task I accomplished along with our President was requesting money from student
government in order to do exciting things next semester like sending some of our brothers to Chicago for
P.B.L.I. Some of my other duties included budgeting for events and providing the funds needed to put on a
great Formal.

While it is easy to highlight the things I have done, it is never quite so when assessing where I have fallen
short. Some things I wish to improve upon in order to better serve you this coming semester are going to be
discussed here. Going forward I plan to use my committee much more to provide increased transparency with
how I execute my duties and to receive more input from fellow brothers on how we conduct our finical
operations. I feel it is important that you all understand where our funds are deployed and to what ends. I also
plan to keep a better record of how are funds are used and make this available to any brother who wishes to
review our operations. I will also try to be speedier in my reimbursements to brothers who put their own
money down for things when paying by check is not possible. Some of you waited anxiously for weeks and I
apologize for not getting your money returned in a more timely manner.

All in all it has been a pleasure serving you and being what I feel is a vital cog in the machine that makes our
chapter run. I look forward to improving my service to you and can say that I am excited for another amazing
semester with you guys in the spring! Thank you all for entrusting me with this position it has been a pleasure
and an honor to serve my brothers.

LETTER FROM THE VP OF FUNDRAISING
!
Brothers of Alpha Kappa Psi Beta Upsilon Chapter,
With all of the skills and knowledge held by every one of you brothers of the chapter, we can accomplish so
many impressive things. Through my position as Vice President of Fundraising for our chapter, my role is to
acquire the necessary funds to achieve our full potential. My plan has been, and is, to accomplish this through
efforts in two areas: sponsorships and programming.

Sponsorships can be beneficial two-fold to our chapter. These opportunities not only give us the funds we
need to succeed, but also show our name and portray and image of our connections to the local business
community. This semester, I created a three-level sponsorship package and have targeted businesses with
which we can create mutually beneficial relationships. I plan to continue communication and target additional
businesses, as I believe sponsorships are a great way to acquire funds and create relationships that can be
continued into future years.

Programming is also a very important area of our fundraising efforts, as it provides a way for brothers to
combine efforts and get involved while creating additional funds for our chapter. This semester, we created a
football-related tee shirt to be sold around campus for a small up-charge. Brothers were offered the
opportunity to get involved and reach out to students on campus to sell them. While we were able to sell a
good amount of shirts, the timing of the initiative affected its success, which will be used as a learning point
and taken into consideration in the future. Heading into the next semester, I plan to have more events in which
brothers can participate, which combine fundraising and social aspects of brotherhood, as well as a possible
kickball tournament, which would elicit participation further around campus.

I hope that I may reach and exceed goals and expectations this coming semester, and look forward to
working with all of you to make our chapter the best it can be.

Sincerely,

Matt Christopherson

LETTER FROM THE MASTER OF RITUALS
!
Dear Brothers of the Beta Upsilon Chapter,
It’s amazing how in a blink of an eye the fall 2013 semester has come to an end. It has truly been an honor to
serve you as Master of Rituals this semester and I look forward to what the spring semester has ahead for the
brotherhood. This position has allowed me to grow as a person and taught me that being a leader isn’t just
about a title, but a commitment to my fellow brothers and this chapter as a whole.

I would be lying if I said my new role hasn’t been frustrating and very stressful at times. From the beginning of
the semester I was thrown into the fire, so to speak, and didn’t have a guideline or manual that outlined what
needed to be done in preparation for all rituals. For example, having Pledge Induction in the Russell House
theater was not the venue I had in mind. (It took me an entire week to truly understand how the room
reservation process worked). It’s crucial for the pledges to understand the importance of the pledge program
so having the ritual in the Rutledge Chapel or Harper College would have been my preference and I hope we
can secure one of those venues for next semester.

This upcoming semester I plan on developing a manual that future Masters of Rituals can refer to so that they
do not run into the same problems I encountered this semester. Additionally, there are going to be drastic
changes made to the Mid and Honor Court ceremonies that are not in my control. Upper management at the
Heritage Center is cracking down on brothers in the audience asking pledges questions. As a result, the
members on panel will be the only brothers asking questions. I am going to need your help next semester
with input and feedback as to what we want the panel to ask the pledges. I also look forward to working
closely with the newly elected pledge educator to develop a custom set of interview questions for each
pledge to make sure they have a firm grasp on all the material and are able to learn from any questions
missed on their quizzes.

Finally, one goal that I missed the mark on this semester was assembling brothers who are involved in both
pledge induction and initiation and having them meet to review and practice the ritual prior to its scheduled
date. In order to implement this goal next semester I plan on having a temporary committee that can assist
me, not only in making sure we practice the rituals beforehand, but also to assist with Mid and Honor Court to
ensure these events continue to run smoothly.

I look forward to my final semester in Alpha Kappa Psi and hope that my proposed changes to the Master of
Rituals position will have a positive impact and will further propel this fraternity to excellence in the future.

PERFORMANCE REVIEW: FALL 2013
LETTER FROM THE INTERCHAPTER RELATIONS CHAIR
!
Brothers of Alpha Kappa Psi Beta Upsilon Chapter,
In past years, this position has not been looked at as holding great purpose or value to our chapter. Before
entering the position it was my goal to encourage the brotherhood to realize the importance of holding strong
relationships with our fellow Alpha Kappa Psi brothers near and far. Outside of the immediate brotherhood, it
was my goal to not only strengthen our relations with fellow chapters, but to repair those bonds that have
been broken in the past as a sign of our lack of participation. Although this past semester no Beta Upsilon
brother attended any other chapters in regards to Honor and Midcourt, I am a firm believer that we made
steps towards my goal.

The co-tailgate held with the University of Georgia's chapter of Alpha Kappa Psi was our first encounter with
another chapter here in the Southeast for fall 2013. The feedback I received from our brotherhood was
positive with hopes of participating in this in the future years. It is my hope that in future years, if the
Gamecocks are playing a football game against a team that has an Alpha Kappa Psi chapter, we will invite
them or ask to co-mingle in the form of a tailgate. This gave the brothers a chance to network in a casual
environment while enjoying the perks of college football. The second involvement of different chapters was
our purchase of a memorial brick at the University of Florida's Beta Psi chapter. This was the perfect example
of the types of things that can be done with this position. The purchase was small and simple, yet signified
unity and helped out fellow brothers. Although this was a one-time event, I would suggest future chair-holders
to take part in simple things such as this.

While we had many successes this semester, I would say our biggest failure was the lack of involvement from
my committee. Although most of the work this position requires can be completed by just the chair-holder, it
is important that committee members participate in order to be recognized as an essential part of this chapter
as well as share their ideas. On the topic of ideas, I realized that most all events that were held throughout the
last semester were brother-inspired, meaning fellow brothers came up with the ideas and pitched it to me.
This process was extremely effective seeing how I was excited to put the brothers' ideas into play and it
helped me with creativity when necessary.

Although I am not graduating, in the future I would like the see this position expand in terms of value
throughout the brotherhood. I believe that I have laid a foundation for the future chair-holder and it will be their
responsibility to continue my work. I look forward to seeing this chapter gain recognition not only throughout
our region, but throughout the nation.

Sincerely,

!Jessica Garrity

PERFORMANCE REVIEW: FALL 2013
LETTER FROM THE SERVICE CHAIR
!
Brothers,

For starters, thank you so much for all of the hard work that you all have put in to chapter events this semester, both
service and non-service. This chapter is capable of amazing things, and in my three years in the Beta Upsilon chapter it
has been such a pleasure to see it grow and change for the better. This semester included many service events that I hope
you all enjoyed participating in. Boo at the Zoo was a blast, and I’m so glad that we got to participate in it. I hope that this
continues to be a popular event with AKPsi, and that we are able to continue doing it in the future. Also, we had the
chance to volunteer at a local Fall Festival and help provide some family fun to the local community. Furthermore, we
upheld our obligations to Keep the Midlands Beautiful through maintaining our portion of Whaley Street. Additionally, we
provided a lot of support to USC’s Pack-A-Thon, both through donated funds and volunteers.

I also want to say a special thank you to those brothers that put forth additional service opportunities to the brotherhood. I
really want service event planning to be a collaborative group effort, and events are only made better through additional
chapter involvement. Thanks to the ambition and compassion of our fellow brothers, we were also able to spend a day
playing with local children at the zoo and provide supplies and funds for stockings to go to people with cerebral palsy.
Furthermore, many of you participated in community service opportunities outside of the brotherhood. Obviously
community service extends so much further than just the events that are broadcasted to the brotherhood, and I’m so glad
that many of you participated in other events. Some of these events included 5ks, tutoring, and fundraisers for charity
through other Greek organizations.

Overall, I was very pleased with the involvement of the brotherhood this semester. Most of you completed your required 5
service hours and achieved your event point. Many of you attended multiple events that were offering event points, which
is amazing. Also, this semester we began fining brothers for signing up for service events and then not showing up.
Although I was initially nervous about the response to this initiative, I have heard nothing but positive feedback. I hope that
the brotherhood recognizes that this is only to increase the accountability of the chapter, and not to service as a deterrent
to signing up for service events. This policy will be continued going in to next semester, and I hope to see a decrease in
fines.

Next semester will be another semester filled with fun and impactful service events. I am hoping to plan at least one
service event per month that will offer opportunities for event points. I am going to use my contacts to organize days to
volunteer with organizations such as The Ronald McDonald House and The Salvation Army. Additionally, I volunteered last
year at an annual Multiple Sclerosis Society walk that is held at the River Walk, and I am hoping to involve the chapter this
year depending on the chapter schedule. Also, we will hold our second semi-annual highway clean up, as required by
Keep the Midlands Beautiful. I am especially excited to promote chapter involvement in Relay for Life next semester, and
am so excited that a few of you have already joined the AKPsi team! Relay for Life is my favorite service event of the year,
so get ready to hear me talk about it EVERY SINGLE WEEK. Relay for Life is such an inspiring event to attend, and I highly
encourage you to attend it if you haven’t before. I lost my grandmother to cancer last April only a week before Relay, so
this event is very close to my heart. I really hope that as a chapter we are able to raise a considerable amount of money to
go to the American Cancer Society, as well as have a large presence at the actual event.

In conclusion, thank you all for such an amazing semester and I hope that next semester we can continue to make a
positive impact on the community. I truly believe that AKPsi holds many of our generation’s leaders, and it is up to us to
serve as leaders and role models within the community. I encourage all of you to never miss an opportunity to make a
positive difference in the life of someone else, and continually look for ways to give back to the community. Never for a
second think that your efforts can’t make a difference.

Performance Review Fall 2013

  • 1. End of the Semester Performance Review Alpha Kappa Psi Beta Upsilon University of South Carolina Fall 2013 ! ! ! of !1 17
  • 2. LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT ! Dear Brothers of Beta Upsilon: !Firstly, thank you all once again for your support and hard work throughout this past semester. This chapter to me is an avenue in which the most important aspects of my life are all interconnected.  It is the entity that drives and facilitates my passion to succeed while encouraging those around me to follow suit.  Beta Upsilon leaves its footprint on more than just the business school; it ultimately has a direct impact on the future leaders of the professional realm. You are the reason why we are known as “the premier developer of principled business leaders,” and it is your combined efforts that make our chapter great. !As you all know, success does not come easy, and this was evident towards the beginning of the semester. We were faced with a variety of challenges, or shall we call them “opportunities”, that existed within the chapter. Disengagement from the chapter, lack of accountability within committees, and just an overall absence of unity hindered our progress. We are growing very quickly as a chapter, and the growing pains were beginning to surface as the new semester began. !But with these opportunities came an avenue for us to all learn, lead, and grow together. We will improve on our downfalls and work together to move this chapter forward. At the very beginning of the semester I challenged you to pursue your passion whether it be within the chapter or external. My goal was to empower you, give you the tools you needed to achieve your goals and objectives, which lead to the creation of a new executive board position, the VP of Risk Management. !The creation of a new executive board position was just one of the extraordinary feats that Beta Upsilon has accomplished over the semester. We hosted our very first Professionalism Expo while Propensity was expanded tremendously, both giving us incredible exposure throughout campus and within the community. Not to mention we welcomed 19 remarkable new brothers all filled with limitless potential. These are just a few highlights of our recent semester, and believe me when I say we have left our mark. !Let’s continue to improve next semester, get excited for what’s in store for us as we prepare to conclude the year. Look forward to more signature events, and remember my challenge to you. We will continue to make our presence known around the community and ultimately at the University of South Carolina! !My hope is that you will take on my challenge, and go do whatever it is that you are passionate about. The theme for this semester and next semester is “empowerment”. You should not need a title or an executive position to feel empowered; here at Beta Upsilon we are all one unit. We will work together to achieve greatness and do whatever it takes to help one another. If it is something outside of the chapter that passions you, then by all means take initiative, just know that you have an entire brotherhood behind you along the way. I believe that if you do this, you will not only be preparing yourself for your career, but more importantly you will prepare yourself for life’s great trials. !In unity, !Kent ! ! of !2 17 PERFORMANCE REVIEW: FALL 2013
  • 3. LETTER FROM THE EXECUTIVE VICE PRESIDENT ! Dear Brothers of Beta Upsilon, !I cannot believe another semester is over and half of my time serving as your Executive Vice President has passed. I didn’t know what to expect returning from my semester abroad. I anticipated feeling uncomfortable returning to the brotherhood after experiencing such personal growth and change after being away so long. But from the moment I stepped into the first chapter meeting I was reminded that this chapter will always feel like home to me and my heart will always belong with each of you, my family. !Alpha Kappa Psi went through some major changes this semester. I am so proud to be on an Executive Board that has been so cohesive, progressive, and innovative. A few notable accomplishments that stick out in my mind were the first university-wide Professionalism Expo, the creation of the Vice President of Risk Management executive board position, and the separation of Vice President of Membership & Pledge Educator. We also identified major pain points within the Fraternity: brother apathy, brother retention, participation – and tackled them head on by empowering individual brothers to accomplish their goals, practicing diligent transparency, and remaining available & approachable to our chapter. !Executive Vice President has always been a position with undefined responsibilities and (as we learned this semester) one that does not actually exist in our bylaws. I took this opportunity to build and shape the leadership position. One of my major goals was to make chapter more fun to attend so I restructured committee reports by adding in fun facts about executive board members, encouraging VPs to make their reports interesting, creating a brother spotlight presentation, and bringing back weekly current events presentations. A part of motivation to come to chapter is the promise that it will be concise so I eliminated gap time during chapter by consolidating the PowerPoints ahead of time each week. !As my time as a brother in this chapter comes to an end next semester I hope to finish strong as a member of the executive board by helping all of the Vice Presidents to achieve the goals they have set for themselves so that they may leave a legacy each of them is proud of. I continue to enjoy watching the Fraternity evolve with each new pledge class and each new idea that is brought to the table. Every day brings new challenges and I appreciate that they keep life interesting. !In U…and I… !Rachel Heacox

  • 4. LETTER FROM THE VP OF ADMINISTRATION ! Brothers, !Joining the executive board for our Beta Upsilon chapter has its challenging moments but nothing has been more rewarding since coming to USC. Compared to executive boards from before, I felt like our officers as a whole were extremely approachable. It was nice to see younger brothers step up this semester and voice their opinions or concerns with certain topics regarding the brotherhood. I think we have all made small steps in building our brotherhood and growing even more past our potential. There are so many unique and talented people in the Beta Upsilon chapter and I truly believe each of our members will do great things after graduation. !The biggest challenge of the semester for the VP of Administration position was dealing with LOA requests or already LOA brothers. Since my position started in the fall, it was hard to organize who was LOA or wanted to go LOA coming back from the summer. There were emails from brothers from a number of months back stating they would be LOA and at first I completely overlooked the email. It was also a little challenging deciding who could actually be LOA or not, since member retention was something the executive board wanted to focus on this semester. After being here all fall, it will definitely be a lot easier handling requests for next semester since I am very up to date with emails. One vision I have for next semester is creating a Google calendar to keep updated with events and important dates so the brotherhood can have that information in advance, rather than the week of. I feel like a chapter wide calendar will help with member participation for professionalism or other such events and overall boost chapter morale if more brothers are at these events. !Next semester will be my last at Carolina, along with a handful of other officers for our Beta Upsilon chapter. I know I am not alone when I say I am sincerely going to miss each and every one of my brothers, along with the memories created and lessons taught because of joining Alpha Kappa Psi. I have no doubt our brotherhood will continue to grow each year and I cannot wait to see what the future brothers and executive board will set out to accomplish. !!In U…and I… !Hannah Berger ! ! of !4 17 PERFORMANCE REVIEW: FALL 2013
  • 5. LETTER FROM THE VP OF PROFESSIONALISM Dear Brothers of Alpha Kappa Psi Beta Upsilon, It is has been a semester of transition; not only for the new executive board members taking over, but a shift in the needs of the brotherhood. As a whole, you challenged me to desire greatness within the professional development of our members. I hope the Professionalism Committee was able to meet your expectations. Without the support and hard work from each member of the Professionalism Committee, The Final Inquisition, Professionalism Expo, Pledge Training Workshop, Public Speaking Workshop, Propensity, guest speakers and various other professional development activities would not have been possible. Professionalism Committee, thank you for your dedication to developing this brotherhood. I know I am supposed to talk about failures and successes seen in these events. The undeniable fact is all of the events hosted have room for improvement and should be improved. More importantly, I wanted to share with you my goal for this past semester. My goal was to get everyone involved and working together, within my committee, the executive board, and the entire brotherhood. Many committee members took on a specific event to plan and execute, and were able to grow as leaders – that was a success. Different committees were encouraged to work with Professional Development, such as Marketing, Service, and Alumni Relations, which I would also consider partly successful. This goal also meant offering events that would encourage the entire brotherhood to get involved and support fraternity efforts – and, unfortunately, that was a failure. I have spent hours thinking about what more I could have done with my time to provide more opportunities to members. There is more I could have done, and different outlets I could have explored. But, I also realize that there is a limit to what can be accomplished on my end. So, this is where I offer my advice: The executive board and active members can provide many developmental programs and opportunities; however, brothers must be receptive and supportive of these efforts. The entire brotherhood needs to be fully behind events and other experiences planned on behalf of Alpha Kappa Psi. It is your responsibility as members of this fraternity to advocate for your ideas, give support and help to others’ ideas, and participate in their execution. You will get out of this fraternity, what you decide to put in. Further, treat this organization like a business. It is the most beneficial experience you will have in college if you do this. Would you miss a meeting with your boss and not submit assignments on time? No. So do not miss committee meetings and follow through with what you promise. Learn how to navigate through the structure of the organization and make necessary changes when you see the need. Practice how to present your thoughts and feedback without hurting the relationships you have built. Impress your peers and realize these will be the networks you utilize throughout your career. Be someone that Alpha Kappa Psi – your business – is proud to say you are a part of. I told you all at the beginning of the semester to “be the change you want to see” in the fraternity. This brotherhood is full of motivated, intelligent people who have the potential to make a difference within the organization and the world. Hold yourself to higher standards and meet the expectations you set for yourself. Even if you fail, you will become a better person than you are today. I believe in all of you and wish you the best of luck in future endeavors.
With all my love, integrity, and unity, Megan Frank

  • 6. LETTER FROM THE VP OF MARKETING ! Brothers of the Alpha Kappa Psi Beta Upsilon Chapter, !This semester on the executive board has been one of the greatest learning experiences I’ve had thus far. Being VP of Marketing has proven to be both rewarding and challenging, primarily due to the fact that you are never done selling your organization. It’s a continuous effort and that has been one of the most interesting parts about this position. !Due to the tight-knit nature of our executive board, it was extremely beneficial to receive their honest feedback on all tasks that our committee was developing. The support I received for the “Suit Up” marketing campaign for rush was encouraging and permeated throughout the semester. We made great use of social media this semester as a tool to show others the wide array of events we are involved in. I created an Instagram account in early August to increase our photo sharing with both chapters across the nation as well as students on campus. !I would say that the main thing I hope to improve upon next semester is both more effective utilization of my committee members as well as an increase in collaboration with them earlier on in the semester to ensure that they are engaged in the tasks they are involved in. On the other hand, various members were crucial in the promotion of Rush and the Professionalism Expo. I also feel as though I know exponentially more about what marketing techniques work on a campus environment, as well as the amount of time it takes to effectively market ourselves, before rush specifically. !Taking into account the invaluable lessons I have learned over the past 5 months, there are many opportunities that I plan to take full advantage of next semester. The biggest initiative that I plan to leave behind upon graduation is a recruitment video to be used as a major marketing tool over the next 3-5 years. The goal of this video is to visually capture what Alpha Kappa Psi means to each and every one of you brothers, and share that with students at this university who don’t know what they’re missing. In addition, the video will highlight the diverse nature of our organization through the use of all of our different languages spoken. !Lastly, and perhaps most importantly, I plan on fully incorporating the newly elected VP of Marketing throughout the semester. This will eliminate a great amount of the catching up that takes place in the beginning of her term and allow her to focus on her major goals for the semester right off the bat. I look forward to my final semester in Alpha Kappa Psi and hope to make a lasting impression when I am no longer serving on the executive board. I thank you all for your hard work and look forward to serving this organization next semester to the best of my ability. !In U… & I… !Molly Nawalinski ! ! of !6 17 PERFORMANCE REVIEW: FALL 2013
  • 7. LETTER FROM THE VP OF ALUMNI RELATIONS ! Dear Brotherhood,
!I would start off by thanking you for an excellent semester. Many things have happened that I feel have strengthened the bond between all of us. From the craziness of Mountain Weekend to the induction of another great pledge class, we have accomplished great things this semester. !As the VP of Alumni Relations for this past semester, I have learned a great deal. Hopefully, you feel as if I have done a great job in providing you all with the access and opportunity to meet and interact with the current alumni base. One of my biggest successes has to be the “Alumni Weekend” that was orchestrated by the alumni relations committee. Carolina did their part as well, beating Florida 19-14! This was the first semester in which we had a weekend-long alumni event, and I feel as if it was a great success. With over fifteen alumni at the tailgate and five alumni at the following chapter to answer questions, I believe this event was an excellent chance to meet some important alumni. !As much as my committee and I did this semester, there is an area in which I would like to improve upon for the upcoming semester. I am going to try and get the alumni database filled out with up to date information and release this content to the entire brotherhood. Former brother Kevin Christner started this database, and I hope that we can finish it for the brotherhood’s benefit. !This semester has been a blast, and coupled with the fact that Carolina is 10-2 (and beat Clemson for the 5th straight time!), I would say that everyone has had a great start to the 2013-2014 school year. I hope everyone enjoys their time off from school, and returns to Carolina and Alpha Kappa Psi with a resurgence of energy. !In U… And I… !Zachary Chandler ! ! ! of !7 17 PERFORMANCE REVIEW: FALL 2013
  • 8. LETTER FROM THE VP OF FINANCE ! Dear Brothers of the Beta Upsilon Chapter, It is truly shocking to me that this semester is already coming to a close. It feels like only yesterday that we were sitting down at our first chapter and talking about rush. My position as the VP of Finance has kept me busy to say the least. Through the execution of my duties I have learned much about myself and increasingly more about this fraternity and its members. Throughout this semester I have done much to serve you all. The first duty and perhaps the most challenging was collecting dues. I hope that in the future we can work together to get them collected in a more timely and efficient manner. Another task I accomplished along with our President was requesting money from student government in order to do exciting things next semester like sending some of our brothers to Chicago for P.B.L.I. Some of my other duties included budgeting for events and providing the funds needed to put on a great Formal. While it is easy to highlight the things I have done, it is never quite so when assessing where I have fallen short. Some things I wish to improve upon in order to better serve you this coming semester are going to be discussed here. Going forward I plan to use my committee much more to provide increased transparency with how I execute my duties and to receive more input from fellow brothers on how we conduct our finical operations. I feel it is important that you all understand where our funds are deployed and to what ends. I also plan to keep a better record of how are funds are used and make this available to any brother who wishes to review our operations. I will also try to be speedier in my reimbursements to brothers who put their own money down for things when paying by check is not possible. Some of you waited anxiously for weeks and I apologize for not getting your money returned in a more timely manner. All in all it has been a pleasure serving you and being what I feel is a vital cog in the machine that makes our chapter run. I look forward to improving my service to you and can say that I am excited for another amazing semester with you guys in the spring! Thank you all for entrusting me with this position it has been a pleasure and an honor to serve my brothers. In U & I, Michael Huber ! ! of !8 17 PERFORMANCE REVIEW: FALL 2013
  • 9. LETTER FROM THE VP OF FUNDRAISING ! Brothers of Alpha Kappa Psi Beta Upsilon Chapter, With all of the skills and knowledge held by every one of you brothers of the chapter, we can accomplish so many impressive things. Through my position as Vice President of Fundraising for our chapter, my role is to acquire the necessary funds to achieve our full potential. My plan has been, and is, to accomplish this through efforts in two areas: sponsorships and programming. Sponsorships can be beneficial two-fold to our chapter. These opportunities not only give us the funds we need to succeed, but also show our name and portray and image of our connections to the local business community. This semester, I created a three-level sponsorship package and have targeted businesses with which we can create mutually beneficial relationships. I plan to continue communication and target additional businesses, as I believe sponsorships are a great way to acquire funds and create relationships that can be continued into future years. Programming is also a very important area of our fundraising efforts, as it provides a way for brothers to combine efforts and get involved while creating additional funds for our chapter. This semester, we created a football-related tee shirt to be sold around campus for a small up-charge. Brothers were offered the opportunity to get involved and reach out to students on campus to sell them. While we were able to sell a good amount of shirts, the timing of the initiative affected its success, which will be used as a learning point and taken into consideration in the future. Heading into the next semester, I plan to have more events in which brothers can participate, which combine fundraising and social aspects of brotherhood, as well as a possible kickball tournament, which would elicit participation further around campus. I hope that I may reach and exceed goals and expectations this coming semester, and look forward to working with all of you to make our chapter the best it can be. Sincerely, Matt Christopherson ! ! of !9 17 PERFORMANCE REVIEW: FALL 2013
  • 10. LETTER FROM THE MASTER OF RITUALS ! Dear Brothers of the Beta Upsilon Chapter, It’s amazing how in a blink of an eye the fall 2013 semester has come to an end. It has truly been an honor to serve you as Master of Rituals this semester and I look forward to what the spring semester has ahead for the brotherhood. This position has allowed me to grow as a person and taught me that being a leader isn’t just about a title, but a commitment to my fellow brothers and this chapter as a whole. I would be lying if I said my new role hasn’t been frustrating and very stressful at times. From the beginning of the semester I was thrown into the fire, so to speak, and didn’t have a guideline or manual that outlined what needed to be done in preparation for all rituals. For example, having Pledge Induction in the Russell House theater was not the venue I had in mind. (It took me an entire week to truly understand how the room reservation process worked). It’s crucial for the pledges to understand the importance of the pledge program so having the ritual in the Rutledge Chapel or Harper College would have been my preference and I hope we can secure one of those venues for next semester. This upcoming semester I plan on developing a manual that future Masters of Rituals can refer to so that they do not run into the same problems I encountered this semester. Additionally, there are going to be drastic changes made to the Mid and Honor Court ceremonies that are not in my control. Upper management at the Heritage Center is cracking down on brothers in the audience asking pledges questions. As a result, the members on panel will be the only brothers asking questions. I am going to need your help next semester with input and feedback as to what we want the panel to ask the pledges. I also look forward to working closely with the newly elected pledge educator to develop a custom set of interview questions for each pledge to make sure they have a firm grasp on all the material and are able to learn from any questions missed on their quizzes. Finally, one goal that I missed the mark on this semester was assembling brothers who are involved in both pledge induction and initiation and having them meet to review and practice the ritual prior to its scheduled date. In order to implement this goal next semester I plan on having a temporary committee that can assist me, not only in making sure we practice the rituals beforehand, but also to assist with Mid and Honor Court to ensure these events continue to run smoothly. I look forward to my final semester in Alpha Kappa Psi and hope that my proposed changes to the Master of Rituals position will have a positive impact and will further propel this fraternity to excellence in the future. • 11. LETTER FROM THE INTERCHAPTER RELATIONS CHAIR ! Brothers of Alpha Kappa Psi Beta Upsilon Chapter, In past years, this position has not been looked at as holding great purpose or value to our chapter. Before entering the position it was my goal to encourage the brotherhood to realize the importance of holding strong relationships with our fellow Alpha Kappa Psi brothers near and far. Outside of the immediate brotherhood, it was my goal to not only strengthen our relations with fellow chapters, but to repair those bonds that have been broken in the past as a sign of our lack of participation. Although this past semester no Beta Upsilon brother attended any other chapters in regards to Honor and Midcourt, I am a firm believer that we made steps towards my goal. The co-tailgate held with the University of Georgia's chapter of Alpha Kappa Psi was our first encounter with another chapter here in the Southeast for fall 2013. The feedback I received from our brotherhood was positive with hopes of participating in this in the future years. It is my hope that in future years, if the Gamecocks are playing a football game against a team that has an Alpha Kappa Psi chapter, we will invite them or ask to co-mingle in the form of a tailgate. This gave the brothers a chance to network in a casual environment while enjoying the perks of college football. The second involvement of different chapters was our purchase of a memorial brick at the University of Florida's Beta Psi chapter. This was the perfect example of the types of things that can be done with this position. The purchase was small and simple, yet signified unity and helped out fellow brothers. Although this was a one-time event, I would suggest future chair-holders to take part in simple things such as this. While we had many successes this semester, I would say our biggest failure was the lack of involvement from my committee. Although most of the work this position requires can be completed by just the chair-holder, it is important that committee members participate in order to be recognized as an essential part of this chapter as well as share their ideas. On the topic of ideas, I realized that most all events that were held throughout the last semester were brother-inspired, meaning fellow brothers came up with the ideas and pitched it to me. This process was extremely effective seeing how I was excited to put the brothers' ideas into play and it helped me with creativity when necessary. Although I am not graduating, in the future I would like the see this position expand in terms of value throughout the brotherhood. I believe that I have laid a foundation for the future chair-holder and it will be their responsibility to continue my work. I look forward to seeing this chapter gain recognition not only throughout our region, but throughout the nation. Sincerely,

  • 12. LETTER FROM THE SERVICE CHAIR ! Brothers,
For starters, thank you so much for all of the hard work that you all have put in to chapter events this semester, both service and non-service. This chapter is capable of amazing things, and in my three years in the Beta Upsilon chapter it has been such a pleasure to see it grow and change for the better. This semester included many service events that I hope you all enjoyed participating in. Boo at the Zoo was a blast, and I’m so glad that we got to participate in it. I hope that this continues to be a popular event with AKPsi, and that we are able to continue doing it in the future. Also, we had the chance to volunteer at a local Fall Festival and help provide some family fun to the local community. Furthermore, we upheld our obligations to Keep the Midlands Beautiful through maintaining our portion of Whaley Street. Additionally, we provided a lot of support to USC’s Pack-A-Thon, both through donated funds and volunteers.

I also want to say a special thank you to those brothers that put forth additional service opportunities to the brotherhood. I really want service event planning to be a collaborative group effort, and events are only made better through additional chapter involvement. Thanks to the ambition and compassion of our fellow brothers, we were also able to spend a day playing with local children at the zoo and provide supplies and funds for stockings to go to people with cerebral palsy. Furthermore, many of you participated in community service opportunities outside of the brotherhood. Obviously community service extends so much further than just the events that are broadcasted to the brotherhood, and I’m so glad that many of you participated in other events. Some of these events included 5ks, tutoring, and fundraisers for charity through other Greek organizations.

Overall, I was very pleased with the involvement of the brotherhood this semester. Most of you completed your required 5 service hours and achieved your event point. Many of you attended multiple events that were offering event points, which is amazing. Also, this semester we began fining brothers for signing up for service events and then not showing up. Although I was initially nervous about the response to this initiative, I have heard nothing but positive feedback. I hope that the brotherhood recognizes that this is only to increase the accountability of the chapter, and not to service as a deterrent to signing up for service events. This policy will be continued going in to next semester, and I hope to see a decrease in fines.

Next semester will be another semester filled with fun and impactful service events. I am hoping to plan at least one service event per month that will offer opportunities for event points. I am going to use my contacts to organize days to volunteer with organizations such as The Ronald McDonald House and The Salvation Army. Additionally, I volunteered last year at an annual Multiple Sclerosis Society walk that is held at the River Walk, and I am hoping to involve the chapter this year depending on the chapter schedule. Also, we will hold our second semi-annual highway clean up, as required by Keep the Midlands Beautiful. I am especially excited to promote chapter involvement in Relay for Life next semester, and am so excited that a few of you have already joined the AKPsi team! Relay for Life is my favorite service event of the year, so get ready to hear me talk about it EVERY SINGLE WEEK. Relay for Life is such an inspiring event to attend, and I highly encourage you to attend it if you haven’t before. I lost my grandmother to cancer last April only a week before Relay, so this event is very close to my heart. I really hope that as a chapter we are able to raise a considerable amount of money to go to the American Cancer Society, as well as have a large presence at the actual event.

In conclusion, thank you all for such an amazing semester and I hope that next semester we can continue to make a positive impact on the community. I truly believe that AKPsi holds many of our generation’s leaders, and it is up to us to serve as leaders and role models within the community. I encourage all of you to never miss an opportunity to make a positive difference in the life of someone else, and continually look for ways to give back to the community. Never for a second think that your efforts can’t make a difference. !In U… and I…. Katie Halligan
