Areas of Concern
➢ 7 out of 24 students (29%) in College Composition English (Trimester 2) were required to take the placement
exam due to not meeting EWU’s English 101 entry requirements.
➢ ENG 101 placement requirements are based on SBA (L3+), SAT, or ACT scores. Using SBA scores as a
reference:
○ Two students scored a L2.5 ­­ current extended pass rate for WA State graduation
○ Three students scored a L2
○ Two students scored a L1
○ One student had no SBA test results from 2014­2015
○ One student qualified for program placement due to ACT scores
➢ Placement data (SBA/SAT/ACT) was available before the start of Trimester 2. EWU did not notify the district
that those students did not meet their minimum requirements until the week before the trimester began. Placement
testing was not held until after the start of Trimester 2.

2. ➢ Students who fail this placement test will have one retake opportunity at a later date. This is no additional
recourse for program placement once students are enrolled in the class.
Suggested Next Steps
➢ Establish a new prerequisite requirement for College Composition English:
○ SBA ­­ L3 or higher
○ ACT ­­ 18­27 Combined Score
○ SAT ­­ 480 or higher
➢ Use new prereq requirement(s) to identify students who will need placement testing or higher test scores for
course placement and provide the following interventions:
○ Schedule mock placement testing using EWU rubric in English 10, 11 and ENG 101 prereq courses.
○ Schedule additional ACT exams and provide students with prep materials.
○ Schedule students to take the SBA retake in November to increase their scores (Note: this test session
takes place at the end of Trimester 1 and score results will not be released in time for Trimester 2. This
option is only available for Trimester 3 EWU 101 courses).
