  2. 2. COMMON CORE <ul><li>Ninth graders entering high school in 2012-2013 year and later complete what is now the Common Core academic requirement to graduate high school. </li></ul>
  3. 3. Block Schedule <ul><li>WCPSS high schools utilize a 4 by4 Block schedule (90 minutes) with the exception of Enloe and Broughton High Schools. This allows students to earn 8 credits each school year. </li></ul>
  4. 4. Course Requirements for COMMON CORE <ul><li>English 4 </li></ul><ul><li>English I, II, III, & IV </li></ul><ul><li>Mathematics 4 </li></ul><ul><li>Math I, II, III, IV </li></ul><ul><li>4 th Math course to be aligned with the student’s post high school plan </li></ul><ul><li>Science 3 </li></ul><ul><li>A Physical Science Course, Biology, Earth/Environmental Science </li></ul><ul><li>Social Studies 4 </li></ul><ul><li>World History American History I, American History II, Civics and Economics </li></ul><ul><li>Healthful Living 1 Recommended in 9 th grade </li></ul><ul><li>JROTC counts as a HL credit </li></ul><ul><li>Second Language-Not required for graduation BUT required to meet minimum application requirements for a UNC. </li></ul>
  5. 5. Requirements Cont: <ul><li>JROTC programs are offered at Sanderson, Wake-Forest Rolesville and Broughton high schools. </li></ul><ul><li>Electives courses are for specified schools only. Refer to high school program planning guide (check WCPSS website) for prerequisites and course recommendation. </li></ul>

High School Courses <ul><li>Teachers make recommendations for 9 th grade core classes based on student’s current class performance, grades and test scores (EOG/EOC’s). </li></ul><ul><li>The names of the high school math classes are subject to change and have not yet been finalized. </li></ul>
  7. 7. High School Courses taken at the Middle School <ul><li>Students in grades 6-8 will receive credit for high school mathematics courses (EOC’s) passed in middle school. DRMS currently offers Algebra I. </li></ul>

Middle School Mathematics Courses for High School Credit Frequently Asked Questions <ul><li>Which course(s) must students successfully complete in order to earn one unit of high school credit? </li></ul><ul><li>Students must successfully complete four credits of math which would be different for each student. NC is moving toward requiring Algebra II level math to graduate. </li></ul><ul><li>Can a student repeat a mathematics course for credit at the high school level? </li></ul><ul><li>No. While a student may repeat a course that he/she has passed, he/she may not receive credit for the same course twice. </li></ul><ul><li>If a student earns credit at the middle school level, will he/she have to take additional courses at the high school level as well? </li></ul><ul><li>Yes. Students who have earned one (or more) units of credit in middle school will still have to complete four math credits in high school addition to satisfy graduation requirements. </li></ul>

Middle School Mathematics Courses for High School Credit Frequently Asked Questions Cont: <ul><li>Will the grades earned in mathematics courses appear on the high school transcript? </li></ul><ul><li>Yes. The grade will be listed on the transcript under Grade 8 with one unit of credit for each high school math course completed. </li></ul><ul><li>Will the grade earned be included the student’s high school grade point average (GPA)? </li></ul><ul><li>No. Only courses taken during the high school years will be included the student’s grade point average. </li></ul>

Early Graduation <ul><li>High School students can graduate in 6 semesters or less if the following requirements are met: </li></ul><ul><li>Show satisfactory mastery of high school academic skills and concepts. </li></ul><ul><li>Show a need for early graduation </li></ul><ul><li>Meet the graduation course and testing requirement that were effective the year of entering 9 th grade for the first time. </li></ul><ul><li>**The Principal and his committee considers requests and deny or approve an early graduation based on the criteria stated above. </li></ul>

National Collegiate Athletic Association <ul><li>College/University </li></ul><ul><li>Graduate from a high school </li></ul><ul><li>Complete required courses (varies by college). </li></ul><ul><li>Present a minimum required GPA in core courses </li></ul><ul><li>Achieve a combined SAT or ACT sum score that matches your GPA </li></ul>

  16. 16. All Wake County 8 th grade students promoted to the 9 th grade, are required to register at a Wake County Public High School regardless of whether you will be applying to a Charter or Private School or moving out of county.
