- 1. This week MSP would like to spotlight another local sustainable business, Spin Laundry Lounge
in the Mississippi District. MSP’s Kelly Raynor visited Spin this week to wash some clothes in
preparation for the upcoming clothing swap on March 20th! Spin reinvented the laundry
experience in 2014 when it opened the environmentally friendly, multifaceted
cafe/bar/laundromat/arcade. They hold a gold certification from the City of Portland’s
Sustainability at Work program and use the world’s most water and energy efficient machines,
complementary ecofriendly detergent is provided in bulk to reduce wasteful packaging, dryer
balls are used instead of toxic dryersheets, and the cafe uses compostable togo containers.
They also support social sustainability by donating abandoned laundry (including
looselymatched single socks!) to the Portland Rescue Mission.
If all these ecofriendly features aren’t enough to convince you, Spin has some serious
customer service chops as well! While the laundry spins you can enjoy beer, wine, coffee, and
local small bites and cafe fare like the Georgie panini with peanut butter, basil, orange
marmalade, and a locally made Srirachalike sauce ($6) or the Charcuterie Board with Grand
Central como, Olympia Provisions meats, mixed olives, and mustards ($8). You can also take
advantage of the complimentary wifi, watch a Blazers game, or play an assortment of arcade
games. A tech savvy business, you can get a text when your laundry is done or check on
machine availability before you make a trip, and you can pay for the machines with cash,
credit/debit, or apple pay.
Spin Laundry Lounge is open seven days a week from 8ammidnight and is located at 750
North Fremont St. All photos property of Spin Laundry Lounge and Nate Watters.
