Risk Taking and The Teenage BRain
Professor Rhoshel Lenroot is the Chair of infant, Child and adolescent Psychiatry at
the University of nsW and Clinical director for Child and adolescent Psychiatry in the
south eastern sydney and illawara regions. Professor Lenroot has combined research
on brain development using MRi with a longstanding interest in mental health outcomes
for young people and will discuss the effects of substance abuse on the teenage brain.

Dr Daniel Hermens is a Research Fellow at the Brain Mind Research institute,
University of sydney. as the head of the Clinical neurophysiology Laboratory and
Team Leader of the Youth Mental health neurobiological Research Program, he is
currently conducting studies using neuroimaging and cognitive measures to detect
early brain changes in young people who are drinking at harmful levels. he will show
how the neurobiological effects of alcohol can help us understand why the teenage
brain is at risk.

Described as Australia’s first “Cyber Cop”, Susan McLean led the Victoria Police
taskforce designed to tackle the soaring problem of cyber bullying.With research indicating almost 90 per cent of all school abuse occurs online, Susan will
define cyber bullying, provide internet safety tips and discuss fighting back.

As the Director of the Graduate Program in Sexual Health at Sydney University,
Dr Patricia Weerakoon has obtained a media profile as a sexologist.This session will focus on what entering into a sexual relationship means to different
people and how decisions are and should be made.
