My career has covered twenty five years, all in the printing industry
environment. However, I feel my managerial knowledge and experience can be
adapted to any working environment or career. Adaptation is a quality that I have
been able to acquire throughout my career through the printing industry. Each
step in my managerial career has involved a need to adapt to the work duties
and surroundings to help coach and manage a department. Most of my
departmental duties were to reach production goals in a very timely manner,
mostly all have been in a 24 hour turnaround environment. This is always a very
stressful environment for all involved. I have been successful in maintaining a
working department that reached these goals while also maintaining quality
products and meeting the safety standards set by the company. These qualities
have been developed through not only hard work, but attention to detail and the
desire to bring my best to each day’s work for my employer and my peers.
Through the years I have been able to create an ability to adapt to the ever
changing technological landscape. The print industry has seen a huge amount of
technological advancement in the past 15 years. I began working in the

2. newspaper industry and have evolved into the commercial printing and
publishing world. I have been involved in the technological evolution of printing
and seen great strides in the past 15 years of both electronic and print format. I
began my career in managing a department of 50 to 80 employees which pasted
the newspaper pages to boards and were shot with a camera to make large
negatives that were converted to plates for the press. In a few years technology
advanced to allow pages to be created on screen and output to film or negative,
thus eliminating a working staff of 50 to 80 employees to just 5 or 10. During this
time I was in charge of developing and overseeing the process of receiving and
editing PDF formatted display ads for the Birmingham News, in the early 2000’s,
when the PDF format had just begun being utilized in the printing industry. I
managed and trained several departments on how to edit PDF files and create
new PDF files for the newspaper workflow.
When I began working for JS Printing ten years ago, I was able to take my
knowledge of PDF files and help create a newspaper production workflow
environment that relied heavily on PDF files thus helping the department reduce
overtime while increasing production. This allowed the company to reduce the
people needed in the department while giving the customer a faster way to
create and upload files to our website. Also, this eliminated waste and problems
and errors associated with the previous production workflow and reduced the
time customer service had to deal with production issues and could expand their
time selling print mediums to customers.
The past 5 years I have been involved in expanding the 4 color digital

3. printing environment and have been involved in the production workflow of
newsletters, magazines, and perfect bound books from prepress preflighting,
through digital imposition, to color printing, and bindery. JS Printing saw a
dramatic shift from newspapers to magazines and booklets these past 5 years
and needed to make the appropriate shifts in production to meet the demands
while maintaining profitability. I was heavily involved in helping make the
transition by creating production workflows to handle the different size books and
magazines and setup output for the different bindery designs. This involved the
need to understand the budget process to make a project both beneficial and
profitable from a small newsletter project to a mass mailing of magazine
publications.
Adaptation is a growing need in business these days, through my career
in the printing environment I have embraced the need to adapt to the ever
changing business environment. This need for adaptation is not limited to just the
printing industry. With the evolution of technology and increasing global market
the business environment needs both practical and profitable leadership that can
adapt to these ever increasing changes. I believe the managerial knowledge and
leadership I have obtained and developed can be adapted to any managerial
position in any industry or market. I believe my qualities would make me a perfect
candidate for this company.
My desire is to join an established organization that will allow me to further
develop and adapt my managerial skills while applying my experience and
knowledge from years of service. I hope this will assist you in knowing the type of
