Project 2
Site Analysis (30% Group Work)
Submission: 5th October 2015 (Week 10)
Introduction
“For every site, there is an ideal use. For every use, there is an ideal site”
[John Ormsbee Simonds]
The professional works like landscape architecture projects should be developed in systematic process.
Its purpose is to best arrange the elements of any planned development in relation to the natural and
constructed features of a site and its environs. The responsibility of a designer is to guide those involved
in the best solution and to help ensure in all ways possible the project’s success.
Most of the projects in the field are designated to integrate people with the outdoor environment for
them to appreciate nature more. It involves all aspects of the outdoor environment from the design of
intimate gardens to the planning and management of land areas. People use this space most of the
time; when they leave a building, they will have to pass by an open space to reach next destination.
Public open space is considered as a park that acts as a getaway for city residents to escape from the
hustle and bustle of city life. A park should provide a natural setting, or so called ‘pleasure gardens’.
“Place making is both an overarching idea and a hands-on tool for improving a neighborhood, city or
region. It has the potential to be one of the most transformative ideas of this century”.
[Project for Public Space]
Objectives of Project
The objectives of this project:
 To identify and describe the characteristics of a park by conducting a research according to the
topics given.
 To demonstrate the understanding of site selection and site analysis via graphic
communication skills.
 To demonstrate understanding and explanation of landscape features and elements in a park.
Learning Outcomes of this Project
On successful completion of this subject, students will be able to demonstrate the following:
1. Fundamental comprehension on how to conduct site selection and site analysis for better
execution of a landscape project.
2
2. Distinguish the categories, characteristics and elements that govern a park designed by
landscape architects.
Tasks - Methodology
In a group of 6 to 7 members, you are to choose a site from one of the following categories. The site
must be in local within Malaysia ONLY.
1. Community Park
2. Neighbourhood Park
3. Pocket Park
4. Plaza/Boulevard
5. Rooftop Garden
6. Courtyard
7. Indoor Park
TASK 1
You are required to organize a field trip to the site, carry out a field observation and generate a site
inventory and analysis. The information needed is based on the following;
- Introduction to the site
(general info, brief historical background, size of the site, etc.)
- Site Contextual Study
(location inside and outside surrounds the site, layout design, etc.)
- Human Activities
(main regular activities, occasional activities, active/passive)
- Space / Zoning
(description about the zoning of whole area, space arrangement (public/private space) within
the site, some visual study if necessary)
- Circulation Pattern
(the circulation path for both pedestrian and vehicular, the start and end or stopping points in
between, parking etc.)
- Plantings
(plants groups, location of the plants, brief description with appropriate images)
- Hardscape Materials
(types of hardscape/structure found on site, the materials with appropriate images)
**The expected outcome from this task are a set of inventory checklist & data (to do by your own & to
show to your tutors during tutorials), an array of information with images (if necessary) and description,
mapping or diagram and analysis of EACH information stated above (to use SWOT analysis that will be
taught in class).
TASK 2
Based on above information, you need to formulate a site synthesis as overall which just using ONE
diagram. Site synthesis is known as a design solution to the site. In the diagram, you are to explain/
state/write the design solutions/ ideations CONCEPTUALLY with scribbles/ doodles/ sketches/
drawings/ images if necessary. The idea should not be in detailed, just a brief or rough idea of what do
you think would be the best options to improve the existing site condition. You may provide several
options to one single problem/circumstance/condition but it has to be relevance.
**The expected outcome from this task is a diagram (could be a graphic map or a mind map) to be
placed at the last part. It is better to present it individually (not to be with other information) as this would
act as the conclusion of overall.
3
Submission Requirement
This is a group project participate by all group members. Marks shall be deducted to those who don’t
participate in their group. A peer evaluation form will be distributed to all students which will be as a
work log and proof for any issues/complaints encounter aftermath.
FORMATTING
1. To use minimum 4 and maximum 6 of A2 presentation boards, can be digitally or manually
done.
2. To use suitable and readable font types/handwritings. It is advisable to use architectural
writing (if the work is done manually).
3. The orientation of the layout should be standardized for all boards.
4. Do include your group name, members name with ID, and Taylor’s logo at the bottom part with
appropriate size.
5. All titles, headings/ sub-headings, annotations/ note-taking (where applicable) need to be
legible and presentable.
MATERIALS/ MEDIUM
1. May use any medium of paper and board as long as it suitable and presentable.
2. Do apply appropriate technique in pasting the work on board and paper.
3. All diagrams should incorporate the standard landscape graphic communication.

10 minutes only to present the work.
2. Each group can send ONE or more representative whom can deliver an effective
presentation.
3. All students need to comply with a formal dress code during presentation regardless who is
presenting. No slippers and jeans. Dress up properly.
4. Print the assessment sheets (apparently for 2 assessors) and fill up with complete
information before your turn.
5. The presentation will be held during tutorial hours. We will span the 4 hours on that day for
presentation, therefore please be punctual. The presentation queue will be posted on FB
group a day before presentation.
THE PRESENTATION DAY IS ON 5TH OCTOBER 2015, MONDAY AT YOUR RESPECTIVE
TUTORIALS VENUE.

It involves all aspects of the outdoor environment from the design of intimate gardens to the planning and management of land areas. People use this space most of the time; when they leave a building, they will have to pass by an open space to reach next destination. Public open space is considered as a park that acts as a getaway for city residents to escape from the hustle and bustle of city life. A park should provide a natural setting, or so called ‘pleasure gardens’. “Place making is both an overarching idea and a hands-on tool for improving a neighborhood, city or region. It has the potential to be one of the most transformative ideas of this century”. [Project for Public Space] Objectives of Project The objectives of this project:  To identify and describe the characteristics of a park by conducting a research according to the topics given.  To demonstrate the understanding of site selection and site analysis via graphic communication skills.  To demonstrate understanding and explanation of landscape features and elements in a park. Learning Outcomes of this Project On successful completion of this subject, students will be able to demonstrate the following: 1. Fundamental comprehension on how to conduct site selection and site analysis for better execution of a landscape project.
  • 2. 2 2. Distinguish the categories, characteristics and elements that govern a park designed by landscape architects. Tasks - Methodology In a group of 6 to 7 members, you are to choose a site from one of the following categories. The site must be in local within Malaysia ONLY. 1. Community Park 2. Neighbourhood Park 3. Pocket Park 4. Plaza/Boulevard 5. Rooftop Garden 6. Courtyard 7. Indoor Park TASK 1 You are required to organize a field trip to the site, carry out a field observation and generate a site inventory and analysis. The information needed is based on the following; - Introduction to the site (general info, brief historical background, size of the site, etc.) - Site Contextual Study (location inside and outside surrounds the site, layout design, etc.) - Human Activities (main regular activities, occasional activities, active/passive) - Space / Zoning (description about the zoning of whole area, space arrangement (public/private space) within the site, some visual study if necessary) - Circulation Pattern (the circulation path for both pedestrian and vehicular, the start and end or stopping points in between, parking etc.) - Plantings (plants groups, location of the plants, brief description with appropriate images) - Hardscape Materials (types of hardscape/structure found on site, the materials with appropriate images) **The expected outcome from this task are a set of inventory checklist & data (to do by your own & to show to your tutors during tutorials), an array of information with images (if necessary) and description, mapping or diagram and analysis of EACH information stated above (to use SWOT analysis that will be taught in class). TASK 2 Based on above information, you need to formulate a site synthesis as overall which just using ONE diagram. Site synthesis is known as a design solution to the site. In the diagram, you are to explain/ state/write the design solutions/ ideations CONCEPTUALLY with scribbles/ doodles/ sketches/ drawings/ images if necessary. The idea should not be in detailed, just a brief or rough idea of what do you think would be the best options to improve the existing site condition. You may provide several options to one single problem/circumstance/condition but it has to be relevance. **The expected outcome from this task is a diagram (could be a graphic map or a mind map) to be placed at the last part. It is better to present it individually (not to be with other information) as this would act as the conclusion of overall.
  • 3. 3 Submission Requirement This is a group project participate by all group members. Marks shall be deducted to those who don’t participate in their group. A peer evaluation form will be distributed to all students which will be as a work log and proof for any issues/complaints encounter aftermath. FORMATTING 1.
