4. INTRODUCTION
Foundation in Natural and Built Environments
Module: INTRO TO DESIGN - ARC 30205
The Foundation in Natural & Built Environments
(FNBE) programme aims to introduce students
to the different fields of study in the natural
and built environments, and equips students
with the necessary knowledge and skills to
pursue a degree in Architecture or Quantity
Surveying (QS).
Students will undergo series of lectures,
tutorial and study trips that inform the basic
elements of design and how they can be applied
through the understanding of principle of
design. Students will become familiar with the
use of design principle in developing their
design projects. Students will be given 2 and 3
dimensional design projects to develop their
skills and understanding of the subject matter.
The subject can be divided into three
sections: Design Elements, Principles of Design
and Development of Work. Students will
complete a series of 2 and 3 dimensional design
exercises to demonstrate their understanding
and skill in recognizing and applying
the principles.

Descriptions for each artwork
1. Motive 1 - One type of regular geometric shape (derived or inspired by
SET A - Shape manmade )
2. Motive 2 - 2 types of regular geometric (must use the shape from
“motive 1” and add a new shape)
3. Motive 3 - 3 types regular geometric shape - (must use the shape from
“motive 1” & “motive 2” and add a new shape)
4. Select one of the motive from “1-3” to make three different set of full
page pattern
5. Select one pattern in “4” and reproduce three sets and colour each
set with 3 different colour schemes. One must be monochromatic.
6. Geometric art composition. From item “3”, use the shapes and make
an abstract geometric art. Must be coloured. It must reflect your
positive character.

team you are require to create and come up with the brand name, logo,

CUBE MANIPULATION
The aim is to understand the different methods to manipulate a cube. Each
week students are required to follow the task and eventually after 4
series of guided and self learn manipulation, students are required to
make the final model. The final task is to make a final cube model
that reflect or echo the given word - multiply.
