3. INTRODUCTION
• It is an essential and indispensible equipment of the
Community Health Nurse which he/she has to carry
along when he/she goes out home vising.
• It contains basic medications and articles which are
necessary for giving care in the community.
4. DEFINITION
• The Community Health bag is designed to carry equipment and
material needed during a visit to the home, school or factory.
Equipment and material are needed to making tests and to
demonstrate patient care such as eye irrigation, application of
ointments , medications. (TNAI)
• A tool by which the nurse, during her visit will enable her to
perform :
Nursing procedures with ease.

5. BAG TECHNIQUE
• The bag technique is a tool making use of public
health bag through which the nurse, during his/her
home visit, can perform nursing procedures with ease
and deftness, saving time and effort with the and in
the view of rendering effective nursing care.
6. OBJECTIVES
• The overall objective of using community health bag in
a systematic method is," To be able to carry out
nursing procedures in the family with improvised
equipment, articles at home, maintaining scientific and
nursing principles which can also be practiced by the
family in her absence”.
7. PURPOSES
The bag is needed during each home,
school or industry visit.
For inspection of the client like TPR.
For performing certain procedures like
urine analysis, antenatal assessment etc.
9. INDICATIONS
The public health bag is used by public health nurse to
:-
Provide antenatal, intranatal and postnatal care to
mother and child.
Perform certain diagnostic procedures such as Hb
testing, urine testing, early detection of high risk cases
and provide timely treatment.

Demonstrate certain Procedures to family members or
community such as preparing oral rehydration
solution(ORS), baby bath, application of benzyl
benzoate in cases of scabies.
Provide emergency and first aid services in case of
accidents and minor ailments.

• Provide and demonstrate care in case of
communicable diseases such as chickenpox.
• Provide follow up services in chronic illnesses such as
diabetes, paraplegia or amputation.
• Assess the needs of the individual and families and
give health education in case of malnutrition,
environmental hazards, home accidents and
immunization.

26. POINTS TO REMEMBER….
• Care of the bag In order to keep the bag ready for use at any time,
observe some of the following instructions.
• Clean the bag daily, protect from excessive heat or rain to reserve it
in a good condition.
• Replace the drugs, dressing and linen daily in the bag.
• Empty all the contents, wash the bag with soap and water once in a
week or more frequently depending on how much it has been used
and dry it the sun.

• Wash the non-expendable articles such as instruments, linen and
utensils with soap and water and boil them.
• Replace cotton or plastic bags containing swabs and dressing with
sterile one.
• Check gloves, catheters, thermometer and glass articles, replace if
spoilt or broken.
• Repack the bag in an orderly way; keep articles in their usual places
to make them easily traceable.
