THE YEAR IN REVIEW
July 1, 2013 – June 30, 2014
Through your support, we have helped homeless animals find safety,
loving care, medical treatments and new homes.
THANK YOU.
Saving Lives Every Day
Fiscal Year 2014 was a year of significant changes for the Montgomery County
Humane Society. After more than 50 years as the operator of Montgomery
County's public shelter, MCHS now carries out our mission as a fully private rescue.
These changes have given MCHS new flexibility that enables us to focus on and
expand our current services. We are able to add new services that help more
animals, work towards our goals of improving animal welfare and, ultimately, end
animal homelessness in our community.
The Transition from Public to Private
As Montgomery County began phasing in its government-run operations, MCHS
was planning its new life as a 100% private organization. While we assisted
Montgomery County in the downsizing of the old public shelter, we were locating a
building for our rescue and working
with local area shelters to arrange
transfers as soon as possible after
we opened.
By mid-April, we were housing cats
at our new E. Gude Drive location,
and continued to care for dogs in
foster homes. By July, we were
pulling and housing adoptable dogs
in kennels at South Stonestreet Ave.
Our volunteers continue to be an
integral part of our success, from handling animals to helping with events, our
growing volunteer force contributes to our mission every day.
Early Success with Adoptions
Public response to our new rescue has been extremely positive. Through mail, our
web site and social media we have heavily promoted our adoptable cats and dogs,
as well as our many adoptions. Now at operational capacity, we have consistently
adopted nearly 100 animals per month, with most animals going into permanent
homes within two weeks of arriving at MCHS.
In our brief life as a 100% private rescue,
MCHS has built a strong reputation in the
region for being able to pull large numbers
of at-risk animals and adopt them quickly
into loving homes. Currently, we rescue
primarily from three public shelters in
Maryland, the District of Columbia and West
Virginia, and have been recognized as a
leading rescue, in terms of number of
animals saved, at all three locations. We are
working to establish relationships with other
shelters for 2015.
By the end of calendar 2014, we will have saved and adopted out more than 450
cats, dogs, rabbits and guinea pigs since private operations began in April.
Expanding Our Education in Public
Schools
In addition to working with dozens of scouting troops,
MCHS expanded its reach this year into the
Montgomery County public schools.
Now a recognized resource for education in animal
welfare, MCHS has been invited to present programs
for children ranging from pre-school to junior high,
and is expanding its list of humane education
offerings to meet demand. These programs will be
further expanded in 2015, as MCHS’s new facility at
601 S. Stonestreet Ave. will be able to accommodate
more programs, tours and hands-on learning.
So Far in Fiscal 2015
New Offices and Kennels Open in December
In September 2014, MCHS took full occupancy of its building at 601 S. Stonestreet
Ave., where it previously operated a private rescue from 2005 to 2009 to augment
its shelter operations.
Repairs and renovations will be
completed in December 2014, and
MCHS will move its offices, cat and
dog adoptions, humane education and
community outreach programs to this
new location by the end of the year.
We are proud to return home to this
building, which has been specifically
designed and tailor-made to rescue,
house, care for and adopt out
homeless animals. In doing so, we will
be able to help the community better
understand pets and other animals,
manage pet behavior issues, provide improved pet care, and keep pets at home and
out of shelters.
