Message from the
Executive Director
At Habitat for Humanity Halton, we have always
believed that access to affordable housing is crucial
to making our communities healthy and livable for
everyone. Now we know for sure.
It’s a statistic that many of us can’t comprehend: one
in nine families in Halton lives below the poverty
line and struggles to find an affordable place to live.
By some estimates, more than 5,000 Halton families
will require some form of affordable housing in
the next five years. Today many are living in less
than “decent” accommodations. The need in
our community is great and our commitment to
our core principles of “building safe, decent and
affordable homeownership opportunities” in Halton
must continue.
In order to continue to live by these principles,
we rely on the generosity of our volunteers
and community and corporate partners. This
generosity was evident in 2013, when so many of
our volunteers and partners picked up a hammer
at one of our build sites, stocked shelves in our
ReStore or held fundraisers for our programs.
Through donations of time, sweat and money, our
community showed us time and again that they
know as we do that affordable housing is crucial to
making our neighbours healthy and livable
for everyone.
We also now know that there are clear benefits to
providing affordable homeownership opportunities
thanks to the Canada Mortgage and Housing
Improving the health and
wellbeing of families
in Halton
Corporation’s “Building Families’ Futures and
Opportunities Through Habitat Homeownership”
report. The report provides clear proof that when
lower-income families are able to afford a home,
their health and wellbeing is positively affected. The
benefits of owning an affordable home are especially
evident for the children of families, a fact we’ve
known since our organization began.
The year 2013 was pivotal for Habitat Halton and in
this guide we share with you just a few of the year’s
highlights. We had groundbreakings in Milton and
Oakville. Presented a partner family with keys to a
new condo in Burlington, expanded our office and
ReStore to better meet the growing needs of our
community, welcomed new corporate partners and
volunteers, and continued to grow our programs,
services and initiatives. We also introduced our
‘What will you build?’ campaign and announced our
new 75 in 5 strategy.
Without the incredible support of our volunteers,
partners and sponsors, we would not have been
able to achieve so many wonderful things over
the past year, nor would be able to continue to do
such important work for our
community. This we know
for sure: homeownership
benefits everyone and with
your help, Habitat Halton
is continuing to provide
affordable homeownership
opportunities for
everyone in our
community. From all of
as at Habitat, thank you
for helping us build.
John Gerrard,
Executive Director

Habitat Halton’s five year
strategy draws attention to the
need for affordable housing
in our region and the benefits
that good affordable housing
strategies bring to our
residents, neighbourhoods
and communities.
Habitat Halton’s strategy
to focus on building
higher density, multi-unit
developments will increase
the number of Habitat
homeownership opportunities
in the region from an average
of 1.2 Habitat homes per
year, to an average of 15 new
opportunities annually over
the next five year plan.
In 2014, Habitat Halton has
builds planned in Milton,
Oakville and Burlington
with the goal of providing
homeownership opportunities
to 24 partner families.
What will you build?
In 2013, Habitat Halton
introduced their “What will
you build?” campaign as a
way to remind us all that we
not only build homes, we
build hope and we build lives.
We achieve this because we
are a group that makes things
happen.
This year, what will you
build?
68% saw increased
children’s participation in
activities outside of school,
including sports, music, arts
and volunteering
65% said
their children’s
confidence
improved.
There were also
across-the-board
improvements in
children’s academic
performance,
behaviour, grades,
enjoyment of
school and school
attendance.

our community
Our office and ReStore have expanded. The office is now
located in unit 13, next door to the ReStore on Appleby
Line. Moving the office has added approximately 6,000
sq.ft. of additional retail space for the ReStore whose sales
support all of our builds and initiatives.
Thank you to…
The Meeting House in
Oakville who volunteered to remove old
carpet and tile to help us prepare for our
new office space. They had all the carpet
removed, cut, rolled and tossed into the back
of a truck before lunch.
HTT Signs for wrapping our trucks with
beautiful advertising that will last for years to
come. HTT Signs also dedicated more than
three days of their time to put durable new
decals across the entire ReStore and office
front windows, making Habitat Halton more
visible in our community.

was a huge success. The
fundraising campaign, which sells
$2 paper hammers, raised $19,580
for Habitat Halton.

with Habitat Halton for four
full days at the ReStore as a
corporate team. Since September,
18 employees have been

“I heard about Women Day and
thought, ‘What an amazing way
to show that women are strong.’
Everyone was very welcoming and
warm. I was really excited to be given
this opportunity.”
- Stephanie, Women Build Volunteer
“It felt as though my hands were
praying. Not just because they were
so sore after hammering all day, it
was because I knew that together with
members of our synagogue we were
not only building a house, we were
also building a dream for a family and
offering a helping hand up.

Women Build
The Women Build initiative
is about spirit, empowerment,
solidarity, fun and hard work.
It provides an opportunity for
women to learn new trades or
skills under the direction of skilled
tradespersons. On a Habitat for
Humanity Women Build, women
take responsibility for making the
project happen. Initiatives such as
raising public awareness, engaging
with the media, and volunteer
recruitment are all undertaken by a
diverse group of local women.

What is the meaning of home? This is the question
Denver Winch and 5,000 other Grade 4, 5, and
6 students across Canada set out to answer in
Genworth Canada’s “The Meaning of Home” essay
contest.
Denver, an Oakville student, was one of five
runners up in the annual contest run by Genworth,
the country’s largest private residential mortgage
insurer. The contest provides $100,000 in awards to
benefit Habitat builds across Canada. Denver chose
Habitat for Humanity Halton as the beneficiary of
his $5,000 award.
Habitat Halton wishes to thank all of the local
students from Alexander’s Public School and

What is Home?
A dog barking,
A splash of kids in the pool,
The ding of fresh food ready in the oven,
These are the sounds of...
Home!
The smell of smoke of a warm fire,
And smell of Thanksgiving dinner on the table,
And the smell of mud from your dog.
These are the smells of...
Home!
Playing football in the backyard after dinner,
And playing hockey at eight o’clock in the
morning,
Or jumping into the pool at midnight.
These are memories that you have at...
Home!
Feeling secure and not having to worry,
And joyful and happy and a smile that is so big it
goes around the world.
These are the feelings of...
Home!

Groundbreakers.: Putting our partners and sponsors on the map Thank You: Our volunteers make it all possible It Takes a Village: Building homes around the globe Habitat’s Build Programs: How can you help? Future Builds: 2014 is going to be an exciting year A special thank you to the following individuals for their volunteer contributions to the 2013 Review Magazine: Writer : Nneka Onwualu Editor: Roy Campbell Graphic Designer: Andreina Camejo Photo Credits: Maude Leger and Kelvin Chan Staff Marketing & Communications Manager: Angela Goldrup 2 Message from the Executive Director At Habitat for Humanity Halton, we have always believed that access to affordable housing is crucial to making our communities healthy and livable for everyone. Now we know for sure. It’s a statistic that many of us can’t comprehend: one in nine families in Halton lives below the poverty line and struggles to find an affordable place to live. By some estimates, more than 5,000 Halton families will require some form of affordable housing in the next five years. Today many are living in less than “decent” accommodations. The need in our community is great and our commitment to our core principles of “building safe, decent and affordable homeownership opportunities” in Halton must continue. In order to continue to live by these principles, we rely on the generosity of our volunteers and community and corporate partners. This generosity was evident in 2013, when so many of our volunteers and partners picked up a hammer at one of our build sites, stocked shelves in our ReStore or held fundraisers for our programs. Through donations of time, sweat and money, our community showed us time and again that they know as we do that affordable housing is crucial to making our neighbours healthy and livable for everyone. We also now know that there are clear benefits to providing affordable homeownership opportunities thanks to the Canada Mortgage and Housing Improving the health and wellbeing of families in Halton Corporation’s “Building Families’ Futures and Opportunities Through Habitat Homeownership” report. The report provides clear proof that when lower-income families are able to afford a home, their health and wellbeing is positively affected. The benefits of owning an affordable home are especially evident for the children of families, a fact we’ve known since our organization began. The year 2013 was pivotal for Habitat Halton and in this guide we share with you just a few of the year’s highlights. We had groundbreakings in Milton and Oakville. Presented a partner family with keys to a new condo in Burlington, expanded our office and ReStore to better meet the growing needs of our community, welcomed new corporate partners and volunteers, and continued to grow our programs, services and initiatives. We also introduced our ‘What will you build?’ campaign and announced our new 75 in 5 strategy. Without the incredible support of our volunteers, partners and sponsors, we would not have been able to achieve so many wonderful things over the past year, nor would be able to continue to do such important work for our community. This we know for sure: homeownership benefits everyone and with your help, Habitat Halton is continuing to provide affordable homeownership opportunities for everyone in our community. From all of as at Habitat, thank you for helping us build. John Gerrard, Executive Director
  • 3. 5 Habitat Halton’s five year strategy draws attention to the need for affordable housing in our region and the benefits that good affordable housing strategies bring to our residents, neighbourhoods and communities. Habitat Halton’s strategy to focus on building higher density, multi-unit developments will increase the number of Habitat homeownership opportunities in the region from an average of 1.2 Habitat homes per year, to an average of 15 new opportunities annually over the next five year plan. In 2014, Habitat Halton has builds planned in Milton, Oakville and Burlington with the goal of providing homeownership opportunities to 24 partner families. What will you build? In 2013, Habitat Halton introduced their “What will you build?” campaign as a way to remind us all that we not only build homes, we build hope and we build lives. We achieve this because we are a group that makes things happen. This year, what will you build? 68% saw increased children’s participation in activities outside of school, including sports, music, arts and volunteering 65% said their children’s confidence improved. There were also across-the-board improvements in children’s academic performance, behaviour, grades, enjoyment of school and school attendance. * To learn more about how Habitat helps families, or for the full CMHC family impact report, visit www.habitat.ca. 75 in 5 Plan 444 How does Habitat improve family life? Of the 300+ families surveyed across Canada: The Evidence Is In ACCESS TO AFFORDABLE HOUSING IMPROVES LIVES Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC)*, with assistance from Habitat Humanity Canada, conducted a Canada-wide survey of Habitat homebuyers in 2012. The survey, “Building Families’ Futures and Opportunities Through Habitat Homeownership”, revealed that when lower-income families are able to afford a home in a safe neighbourhood, there are clear benefits to their health and wellbeing. 86% reported that they were happier since moving into their Habitat home 89% said that their family life had improved Over 80% identified that having a home that they could call their own gave them a sense of stability 58% reported that they were better off financially now than before they moved into their Habitat home 78% reported improved health, including reduced colds, flu, allergies, asthma symptoms and stress, 31% reported less frequent visits to the doctor, and about 25% reported fewer days of work missed because of illness Family participation in volunteering increased from 52% to nearly 61%. This included additional volunteer hours related to involvement with Habitat activities.
