I am an experienced teacherandcurriculummanagerwhoispassionate aboutworkingcreatively
withinthe artand designsubjectarea. Overthe last9 yearsI have continuedtodevelopavast
varietyof skills,bothartisticallyandpedagogically. This hasallowedme toprogressthroughseveral
roles,includingcurriculumsupervisor, assistantcurriculummanagerand mycurrentrole as
CurriculumManager. I manage 9 staff membersina departmentwhichisrapidlyimprovingfrom
Good to Outstanding. Iam extremelyreflectiveinbothmyteachingandmanagementskills,always
strivingtobuilda learningenvironmentwhichaidsmylearnerstoreachtheirfull potential,notonly
withinArtandDesign but holistically. IfullyembednotonlyBritishValues, EnglishandMaths into
my deliverybutalsosubjectssuchasphilosophy,religiousstudies,politicsandsociology. These are
naturallycovereddue tothe breadthof conceptsmy learnersinvestigateintheirwork.
Withinourcurriculumarea we frequently workwithotherdepartments oncollaborative projects,
whichinclude muralswithinthe college,organisinglearnerstoarrange displaysandsite-specific
artwork. In addition,Ihave setup a large-scale printerwithinthe photographydepartmentanduse
thisto provide auseful service forourstudents andtoproduce promotional andlearningmaterials
for colleaguesinotherdepartments. Ihave builtupverypositive relationshipswithcolleaguesinall
areas of the college, withothersubjectareasandwithinsupportdepartmentssuchasMIS, HR and
Marketing.
I am supportive of the staff Imanage ina carefullybalancedwaywhichallowsthemthe autonomy
theyneedtotake risksand experimentwhile still maintainingconsistentlyhighstandardswithinthe
curriculum. I have frequentmeetingswithmyteamwhere we reflectonwhatisworkingwell and
innovative wayswe canchange whatwe do to make the departmentoutstanding. While leadership
can be challenging, andmeanmakingdifficultdecisions,Ihave quicklydevelopedthe abilityto
manage situationseffectivelyandunderstanditisimportanttosometimesseparatethe professional
fromthe personal. Ihave a positive relationshipwithmystaff,where theyfeelconfidenttomake
suggestionsorrequestsof me whilststill acceptingthe decisionsImake.
My teachinghasbeenassessedasOutstandingandIcontinuouslyendeavourtodeliverlessons
whichstretchand challenge mylearners,whetheratkeystage 3, 4 or 5. While myspecialismisin
Fine Art, I can deliveravarietyof skillsinpainting,printmaking,sculpture,ceramics,textiles,fashion,
graphicdesignandphotography. Ido not like tolimitmyskillstojustone genre andfrequently
encourage mystaff to share knowledge andtechniquessothatwe can all become well-rounded
artists. I am passionate aboutmysubjectandmassivelyenjoysharingthisexcitementanddelight
withmystudents. Artand Designoffersnotonlyavarietyof technical skillsbutthe abilityto
research,analyse,evaluate,critique andengineer. Itoffersinsightintoall othersubjectareasandas
such,I use it to feedintoeverystudentsunderstandingof these subjects.
Withinmymanagementrole,Ihave pioneeredachange fromBTEC qualificationstothe UALab
Diplomaswhichare far more appropriate forourindustry. Withthischange,I have designedthe
paperworkanddeliveryof the coursesinaway whichhasvastlyimprovedthe outcomesforthe
learners. Ihave had to timetable mystaff effectivelytoutilise theirindividual abilitiesandwhen
staffinghasbecome adifficultissueIhave workedtirelesslytocome upwithsolutionswhich
minimise the impactonthe learnerexperience. Ihave strongmathematical skillswhichcompliment
my creativityensuringIeasilyfindsolutionstologistical problems.
I am extremelyITcompetentandfindthe abilitytouse trackingdocumentsandprogrammes
imperative tofulfil myrole. Iamwell knowninmycurrentcollege as highlycomputerliterateand
have takenthe leadin the pastwithnewinitiativessuchasthe implementationof Tumblrblogging,
the use of eTrackr and before thisI hadan external providerbuildaspecialisttrackingsystemon
MicrosoftExcel whichI thentaughtmy colleaguestouse. Trackingisa skill of mine andone that I
greatlyvalue. Ifinditextremelyimportanttoknow how everystudentisperformingagainsttheir
potential andwhenImanage a departmentof 160 studentsitbecomesnecessarytofullyutilise the
databasesandspreadsheetsIhave accessto. I have beenrecognisedassomebodywhousesour
systemseffectivelytodrive the standardsof teaching,learningandassessmentwithinmyarea
forward. It isimportantto not onlybe able toaccess and interpretthe dataavailable,buteffectively
evaluate itandimplementpositivechange. Thisisa skill Ihave developedsince becomingmanager
and I have shownthe abilitytobe forwardthinkingandleadmydepartmentinaway which
constantlyimprovesanddirectlyaddressesmistakesof the past. I am an excellentmanagerbecause
