2. Karl Kjer is an entomologist who has devoted his life to
scientific research. He is a researcher, author, editor,
and teacher, and an award-winning scientist. He holds
a Ph.D. in Entomology from the University of
Minnesota.
“I do not look over my shoulder for consensus” he
says. “I believe that science is a marketplace of ideas.”
3. He is proud of the fact that so much of his scientific
research is original. He was the first to propose that
rRNA structure should dictate hypotheses of
homology. He embraced maximum likelihood early,
and was the first to publish a hypotheses test using
parametric bootstrapping, and the first to publish a
Bayesian phylogeny, and the first to accommodate
rRNA covariation in a phylogeny.
4. A scientist should never be afraid of presenting new
ideas to see how they work, he said. “As long as you
describe what you did, you should be OK, even if your
ideas don’t always work.” However, in hind sight, many
of his ideas have been widely accepted or
corroborated. Kjer has been able to spot ‘winners’
early, just as he has not been sidetracked down a
dead-end
5. Karl Kjer is widely published in peer-reviewed scientific
journals. He is the 2016 recipient of the Alexander
Hodson Distinguished Alumnus award, and the
Alexander-von-Humboldt-Gedächtnispreis 2016.
