This is a tropical-themed presentation on the basics of eLearning, the SCORM standard for tracking modules, and the "natives" who build assign and track them using a Learning Management System (LMS).
2. Tour Itinerary
• SCORM the Beach
• Cruise the Rapid Rapids
• Climb the LMS Mountains
• Climate Change on the Island
• Meet the Natives who:
• Create, Assign, Track Modules
• Swap Travel Stories in Small Groups
• Look at a New Tool in the Mix
3. SCORM the Beach
SCORM is a standard that is used by
all LMS systems to track completion.
Your eLearning files will be
put into a single .zip file.
We often talk about SCORM files, but
it’s not a file type.

4. SCORM is a Standard of Files

5. There are plenty of Authoring Tools in the Sea.
Authoring tools create SCORM content for
your LMS when you publish. Everyone can
access published content, but source files
require a license to make edits.

6. Rapid eLearning means that interactions can be
created without programming.
Cruising the Rapid Rapids
7. Rapid eLearning also refers to an iterative process
where multiple versions are made as designers
work with subject matter experts.
Cruising the Rapid Rapids
8. Rapid Authoring Tools have varying degrees of
interactivity. Choose based on your needs and abilities.
Do you need interactive quizzes?
Screen Recordings?
Software Simulations?
Advanced Branching?
What Do YOU Need?
9. Upload a .zip file
with SCORM content
to your company’s
LMS.
These rigid systems
dictate how you
distribute courses to
your audience.
LMS Mountain
10. Most LMS systems treat
learning as an
independent activity.
Learners are not
typically stranded on
an island.
Our field needs to find
ways to help them learn
from on another.
11. Tin Can/Climate Change slide
I’m thinking something like a tin can in a beach bonfire
Tin Can
12. Meet the Natives
I’m an Instructional Designer.
I work with Subject Matter Experts to
identify learning goals, write content, and
plan interactions for learners to apply their
knowledge.
13. I’m a Developer.
I take the work done by the ID and do
the actual building of the modules.
Meet the Natives
14. Who’s on the Island
I’m the LMS Admin.
I upload the SCORM content, then test it
to be sure that tracking works properly.
I assign required training modules.
15. I’m from HR.
My role is to audit training records for
compliance.
Who’s on the Island
16. We’re the people who take the
modules. Don’t forget about us!
Who’s on the Island
17. Tourists
Are you interested in
going native?
Why or why not?
Natives
Which roles do you
play?
Any advice for others?
Are You a Tourist or a Native?
18. Who should be Voted
Off the Island?
• Wall of Words
• Lots of Slides with a Quiz
• Clashing Audio & Text
Any Nominees?
23. Summary
eLearning Authoring tools create content that can
be tracked with an LMS.
SCORM and Tin Can are 2 different standards used
for tracking activity on an LMS.
Office Mix is a free way to get started creating
SCORM content without learning new Software.

Editor's Notes
Talk about having courses that are available, but only if assigned.
Talk about launching a course, taking part of it, then making an update. Not fun when you assigned it to 500 employees, then learned about the mistake.
Most corporate universities are set up as a one-man island.
The more I think about this, we could position the trip to the Island like visiting the Glaciers in Alaska.
Ten years from now the Island could potentially look much differently. We could say Tin Can could change the climate of corporate eLearning
I can easily tie that to the move away from an LMS, and away from these eLearning authoring tools to move more toward youtube-style, microlearning, and social sites.
They may work in tandem. It may be one person.
This is a two part slide.
I got a good laugh on the “you may not need to know anything about making eLearning or its content”
Compliance with the company’s onboarding strategy as well as compliance with the rules and regulations of that industry.
This slide can show bad examples.
1. Wordy wordy wordy.
2. 82 slides followed by a ten question quiz.
3. Ever have text that doesn’t match the audio?
(Do you need to read everything to me?)
I have a tool
At the club, I did a demo. Don’t think that will work here.
