Editor's Notes
Hello everyone and thanks Ben Kittelson and the Emerging Leaders in Local Government for inviting me to share the Kansas City Google Fiber story with you today.
I want to make 3 points today about implementing a successful gigabit broadband network deployment in your city.
Partner with an incredibly qualified Gigabit ISP
Aggressively facilitate your City’s responsibilities in the project
Drive utilization of the Gigabit Network through civic networking and intentional network building
In Kansas City, we are incredibly fortunate to be the first Google Fiber region in the US but I believe our story and the experience we are having and the methods we have used for civic engagement are portable to any community seeking similar success.
February 10, 2010, Google’s Request for Information for Google Fiber Communities was announced and immediately, tech entrepreneurs in the city’s Crossroads Arts District began organizing and discussing the incredible possibilities of Google’s challenge to cities across the country to join them in their hopes to make the Internet better and faster for everyone. Mayor Pro Tem/Councilwoman Cindy Circo was contacted by Damon Porter about the opportunity and as a result of her engagement, City Manager Troy Schulte assigned me to facilitate the City’s response.
Over 7,000 miles of fiber laid across metro area to date.
Google Fiber has 2 major contractors employing over 100 subcontractors and 1,000+ employees
Google Fiber Outside Plant employs _____ in the KC metro
Google Fiber is bringing permanent local jobs to KCMO. Here’s the Bunny Hutch just south of our downtown.
Tell the story of Google Fiber City digital engagement
Tell the Ben Barreth , Brad Feld story
In KC, the high level of digital engagement brought on by the Google Fiber project has led to hundreds of organized and grass roots efforts to increase the regions digital literacy, erase the digital divide, grow small and homebased businesses online, increase awareness of distance working and distance learning opportunites, support open data policies and civic hacking, support tech entrepreneur growth through a number of accelerator and incubators – most notably the Sprint Accelerator powered by Techstars – which just wrapped up their first session with 10 startups at a demo day at the Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts.
We are seeing more and more evidence of regional collaboration at all levels.
When people start to question the agreement KCMO entered with Google Fiber as going too far or not bringing enough to the table – we ask them if they remember the 20 person to climb Mt. Everest. Doing something the first time takes strong political will to accept risk. KCMO and KCK signed on to Google Fiber when it was proposed as an “experiment.”
As a result of our agreement, KCMO has seen incredible positive media coverage on nearly a daily basis. Our friends at public relations firms value the City’s content media exposure in the 10’s of million of dollars.
We are lucky to have Mayor Pro Tem Cindy Circo with us today. Welcome, would you like to say a few words to the group about our experience and hang around for Q & A?
