INTERGATION OF TRAFFIC CONTROL IN URBAN PLANNING
 Traffic control refers to any actions taken to distribute and regulate the flow of traffic on roads in both time
and space in order to prevent accidents from occurring or to lessen their effects.
 Network operators and controllers manage traffic in accordance with specified traffic management policies
and plans.
 There are several kinds of traffic control depending on the modes of travel.
1. Road traffic control
2. Air traffic control
3. Rail traffic control
4. Marine traffic control
1. Road traffic control
 At the basic level, road traffic control encompasses the design of streets to serve a variety of travel needs in
a region. High-speed traffic is conveyed on highways or expressways, whereas metropolitan areas are
traversed by arterial routes, which offer low-speed transit but access to a variety of nearby locations.
 Methods of control include;
i. Making use of traffic lights and signal controllers.
ii. Using computerized speed detectors to identify moving objects.
iii. The creation of designated lanes for priority vehicles, such as trailers.
iv. Utilizing speed bumps.
 Air traffic control is a necessary responsibility in the ever-growing field of aircraft travel. Conducted by
ground-based personnel, who have been trained and certified by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), air
traffic control responsibilities center on the monitoring of air traffic in a given area, specifically tower control,
approach and departure control, and en route control. Methods of control include;
i. Issuing landing and take-off authorizations and instructions.
ii. Transferring control of departing flights to traffic control centers and accepting control of incoming flights
iii.Monitoring or directing aircraft within an airspace or on the ground.
iv.Compiling information about flights from flight plans, pilot reports, radar or observations
2. Air traffic control
 Rail traffic control is different from all other modes because the operator of the rail vehicle must exercise all
vehicle control through changes in speeds. The operator of a train must almost always foresee events quite far in
advance in order to respond appropriately.
 Methods of control include;
i. The scheduling of trains in a working timetable to plan out personnel's daily schedules and the fundamental
running patterns.
ii. Use of coloured light signals with high intensity.
iii. Manually inspecting the train while it's moving for any defects or leaks.
3. Rail traffic control
 The capacity of ships to maintain control while at sea and prevent potential collisions is a major source of worry
for marine safety. Ships have a big mass, thus changing their speed and direction requires strong forces. For large
commercial ships, the changes also happen over miles-long distances and extremely slowly.
 Methods of control include;
i. Ensuring that captains adhere to the approved steering regulations.
ii. The use of hand flags for ship-to-ship communication.
iii. Using searchlights to visually broadcast Morse code.
iv. The use of sirens as a warning device.
4. Marine traffic control
