This document discusses the DMAIC methodology for improving tennis skills and performance. DMAIC stands for define, measure, analyze, improve, and control. It is typically used in business to reduce process variation but can also be applied to tennis training. The document outlines how each step of DMAIC can be implemented for the serve, such as defining the target, measuring ball placement, analyzing good versus bad serves, improving technique, and controlling variation through practice. An example is provided of a girl who improved her USTA junior ranking from 194 to 79 through two months of DMAIC tennis training.

fun in the process.

on the process and reduce the

in tennis. It’s to your
advantage if you have a
variety of shots.
• Variation refers to the
errors and uncontrolled
shots.
10. Define:
The first step in
this process is to
define the issue to
be addressed and
improved. This
could include:
• Serve
• Return
Aim at Target
DMAIC METHODOLOGY
The Serve
11. Measure:
Measure is done by
determining the
distance from the
target the tennis ball
landed
Serve many balls

15. ILLUSTRATION OF DMAIC METHODOLOGY
TT
Define:
With a chalk, draw
a small circle
(approximately
4” in diameter) at the
the left quadrant of
the serve area.
16. ILLUSTRATION OF DMAIC METHODOLOGY
TMeasure:
Practice your
serve by hitting several
tennis balls with the goal
of hitting inside
the target circle.
After serving 6 balls, count
how many balls landed inside
the T circle, in percentage.
17. ILLUSTRATION OF DMAIC METHODOLOGY
TAnalyze:
Determine from memory
How did you hit the balls
That landed inside the
T circle. These are good
serves.
Know what caused your
bad serve.
?
What caused
this?
18. ILLUSTRATION OF DMAIC METHODOLOGY
TImprove:
Improve your serve
by repeating
your serve strokes
that gave good
serves.
19. ILLUSTRATION OF DMAIC METHODOLOGY
T
Control:
How well you have
your good serves
determines your
capability to
control. Measure
this as a percentage.
Then keep practicing
until your percentage
has improved.
20. ILLUSTRATION OF DMAIC METHODOLOGY
T
Raise your serve
to the next level
by drawing a
3”-diameter T circle.
And then repeat the
same DMAIC process.
