1. Biography Jos Schroevers
Jos Schroevers (1976) is an ambitious young conductor, who knows how to communicate to
musicians and audience, in a passionate manner that clearly shows his love for music. His highly
developed communication and teaching skills, combined with his emotional expression, make him a
sought-after conductor. Jos believes it is important to be innovative and daring when it comes to
classical music and keeps a close eye on new developments. He is very eager to work with renowned
soloists, both vocal and instrumental. He is interested in various art forms and disciplines, which he
tries to melt together.
Jos’ musical career began in 1996 at the Amsterdam Sweelinck Conservatory, where he studied
“Bachelor of Orchestral Percussion” with Jan Pustjens, Peter Prommel and Marinus Komst. As from
1998, he studied “Bachelor Conducting” at the “Brabants Conservatory” and Master Conducting at the
“Royal Conservatory” in The Hague. In addition to this Jos regularly attended rehearsals of the Royal
Concertgebouw Orchestra when famous conductors were conducting the orchestra where he was
inspired by the great rehearsal techniques.
From august 2008 he started focusing more on conducting opera and classical symphony orchestras.
Opera in particular has taken a special place and he started to specialize in this.
Since 2008, he has directed several operas and assisted His second Master studies, “Master of
Orchestral and Opera Conducting” at the Southern Academy of Arts in Tilburg, further accelerated his
personal musical development. This is mainly due to the very inspiring lessons of Louis Buskens and
Antony Hermus. He graduated CUM LAUDE by conducting the Philharmonisches Orchester Hagen!
In 2011 Jos was the winner of the prestigious Dutch Conductor Prize of “Het Kersjesfonds”, which was
awarded in the Royal Concertgebouw in Amsterdam. That gave him the opportunity to follow several
Master classes at home and abroad. In New York, he conducted during the final concert of the Master
class "Rite of Spring" by Stravinsky.
At the London Master classes he was inspired by the energy of Benjamin Zander and his leadership
philosophy "The Art of Possibility". That philosophy, whereby opportunities and creating opportunities
are key, fits in perfectly with Jos' positive, enthusiastic approach to make music.
Jos acted as Assistant Conductor at the National Youth Orchestra, Noord Nederlands Orkest, the
Anhaltische Philharmonie Dessau, Dutch National Opera Academy and L'Orchestre de l'Opéra de
Rouen.
As Conductor Jos worked in various professional organizations such as the Dutch Touring Opera,
Sinfonia Rotterdam, National Youth Orchestra and HET Symfonieorkest. In May 2014 Jos made his
debut as guest conductor of the Hague Philharmonic Orchestra, where he returned in March 2015. In
December 2014 he conducted the Arnhem Philharmonic Orchestra. He recently made his debut with
the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra and the Marine Band of the Royal Netherlands Navy. In 2016
he will make his debut as conductor of the Philharmonie Zuidnederland.
