Vocal Ensemble Workshop Instructor: Ishmael Wallace Item # 202 October 4th -
December 6th
Tuesdays 6:00-7:00 pm
The Vocal Ensemble Workshop at Hemiola Music will cover a wide range of repertoire from
Renaissance to Contemporary. The range of musical styles to enjoy is tremendous, and most
singers only explore a fraction of what is available. Participants will engage in an exploration of a
diverse body of choral literature ranging from Tallis to Messiaen, from Ellington to Manhattan
Transfer, developing invaluable ensemble skills which they can use in any situation. The small class
size ensures that each singer's contribution is easily heard. The course will be led by pianist,
baritone and educator Ishmael Wallace.
This class is for amateur and professional singers with reasonably good music reading skills.
Aria Lab Instructor: Ishmael Wallace Item # 203 October 12th - December 14th
Wednesdays 6:00-7:30 pm
An opportunity to gain experience performing your arias for a supportive group, with
accompaniment and coaching from pianist, composer, and vocal coach, Ishmael Wallace. The class
is limited to 6; every participant will sing every week.
Opera for Listeners Instructor: Ishmael Wallace Item # 204 October 3rd - December 5th
Mondays 6:00-7:00 pm
The marriage of drama and music — opera — can absorb us for a lifetime. In this introduction to
opera, guided by an opera coach who is also the composer of several operas, we will explore
operas from Monteverdi, to Mozart, to Puccini, to Alban Berg, learning about the context of these
great works and discovering the points of connection that can allow us to enter their worlds.

3. Wagner’s Ring Cycle for Listeners Instructor: Ishmael Wallace Item # 205 October 6th -
December 8th
Thursdays 6:00-7:00 pm
The Ring of the Nibelung, Richard Wagner’s cycle of four full-length operas based on Norse
mythology, is utterly distinctive — a world unlike any other. And yet it so summed up its time, and
had such a shattering impact on it, that when we get to know Wagner’s Ring, it illuminates what
we are and where we are from —the very question Wagner’s characters are always trying to answer.
In this class, Ishmael Wallace — composer, vocal coach, and student of mythology — will guide us
into Wagner’s world. He will play and sing these great operas for us, with commentary; we will also
compare great recordings, and read responses to Wagner from his contemporaries.
Classes will be held at Ripley Grier Studios or another midtown studio to be determined.
