• ROLL NO 13
MAIN VEINS OF THE
NECK
VEINS OF THE HEAD AND NECK ARE DIVIDED INTO TWO GROUPS
(1) INTRACRANIAL VEINS
(A)BRAIN VEINS
(B)DURAL VENOUS SINUSES
(C)DIPLOIC VEINS
(D) EMISSARY VEINS
• (2)EXTRACRANIAL VEINS
•
• (A)FACIAL VEIN
• (B) SUPERFICIAL TEMPORAL VEIN
• © MAXILLARY VEIN
• (D)RETROMANDIBULAVEIN VEIN
• © EXTERNAL JUGULAR VEIN
• (D) ANTERIOJUGULAR VEIN
• €INTERNAL JUGULAR VEIN
• (F) SUBCLAVIAN VEIN
FACIAL VEIN
• IT IS FORMED AT THE MEDIAL ANGLE OF EYE
BY THE UNION OF SUPRAORBITAL AND SUPRA
TROCHLEAR VEINS
• IT IS CONNECTED WITH CAVERNOUS SINUS
THROUGH SUPERIOR OPHTHALMIC TRACT
• DESCENDS DOWN THE FACE WITH FACIAL
ARTERY AND PASSES AROUND THE LATERAL SIDE
OF MOUTH
• IT CROSSES THE MANDIBLE,IS JOINED BY
ANTERIOR DIVISION OF RETROMANDIBULAR VEIN
AND DRAINS INTO THE INTERNAL JUGULAR VEIN
SUPERFICIAL TEMPORAL VEIN
• IT IS FORMED ON THE SIDE OF SCALP
• IT FOLLOWS SUPERFICIAL TEMPORAL ARTERY
AND THE AURICULOTEMPORAL NERVE AND
ENTERS THE PAROTID SALIVARY GLAND WHERE
IT JOINS MAXILLARY VEIN TO FORM
RETROMANDIBULAR VEIN
MAXILLARY VEIN
• IT IS FORMED IN INFRA TEMPORAL FOSSA
FROM PTERYGOID VENOUS PLEXUS
• THE MAXILLARY VEIN JOINS SUPERFICIAL
TEMPORAL VEIN TO FORM RETROMANDIBULAR
VEIN
RETROMANDIBULAR VEIN
• IT IS FORMED BY THE UNION OF SUPERFICIAL
TEMPORAL AND MAXILLARY VEIN
• ON LEAVING THE PAROTID SALIVARY GLAND IT
DIVIDES INTO AN ANTERIOR BRANCH WHICH JOINS
FACIAL VEIN AND A POSTERIOR BRANCH WHICH
JOINS POSTERIOR AURICULAR VEIN TO FORM
EXTERNAL JUGULAR VEIN
EXTERNAL JUGULAR VEIN
• IT IS FORMED BEHIND THE ANGLE OF THE JAW BY
UNION OF POSTERIOR AURICULAR VEIN WITH
POSTERIOR DIVISION OF RETROMANDIBULAR VEIN
• IT DESCENDS ACROSS THE STERNOCLEIDOMASTOID
MUSCLE AND DEEP TO THE PLATYSMA MUSCLE AND
DRAINS INTO THE SUBCLAVIAN VEIN BEHIND THE
MIDDLE OF CLAVICLE
• POSTERIOR EXTERNAL JUGULAR VEIN FROM THE
BACK OF SCALP
• TRANSVERSE CERVICAL VEIN FRIM THE SKIN AND
FASCIA OVER THE POSTERIOR TRIANGLE
• SUPRASCAPULAR VEIN FROM THE BACK OF SCAPULA
• ANTERIOR JUGULAR VEIN
ANTERIOR JUGULAR VEIN
• DESCENDS IN THE FRONT OF NECK CLOSE TO
THE MIDLINE
• JUST ABOVE STERNUM IT IA JOINED TO
OPPOSITE VEIN BY JUGULAR ARCH
• THE ANTERIOR JUGULAR VEIN JOINS EXTERNAL
JUGULAR VEIN DEEP TO STERNOCLEIDOMASTOID
MUSCLE
INTERNAL JUGULAR VEIN
• IT IS A LARGE VEIN THAT RECEIVE BLOOD FROM
BRAIN,SCALP,FACE AND NECK
• IT STARTS AS CONTINUATION OF SIGMOID SINUS
AND LEAVES SKULL THROUGH JUGULAR FORAMEN
• DESCENDS THROUGH NECK IN CAROTID SHEATH
LATERAL TO VAGUS NERVE AND INTERNAL AND
COMMON CAROTID ARTERIES AND THEN JOINS
SUBCLAVIAN VEIN TO FORM BRACHIOCEPHALIC VEIN
• IT IS CLOSELY RELATED TO DEEP CERVICAL LYMPH
NODES
• UPPER END DILATION IS SUPERIOR BULB
• TERMINAL END DILATION IS INFERIOR BULB
• A BICUSPID VALVE IS PRESENT BELOW INFERIOR
BULB
INTERNAL JUGULAR VEIN
RELATIONS
• ANTERIOLATERALLY
THE SKIN,FASCIA, STERNOCLEIDOMASTOID AND PAROTID SALIVARY GLAND
ITS LOWER PART IS COVERED BY STERNOTHYROID, STERNOHYOID AND OMOHYOID MUSCLES
WHICH INTERVENE BETWEEN THE VEIN AND STERNOCLEIDOMASTOID
HIGHER UP,IT IS CROSSED BY STYLOHYOID, POSTERIOR BELLY OF DIGASTRIC AND SPINAL PART OF
ACCESSORY NERVE
• POSTERIORLY
THE TRANSVERSE PROCESSES OF CERVICAL VERTEBRAE, LEVATOR SCAPULAE,SCALENUS
MEDIUS,SCALENUS ANTERIOR, CERVICAL PLEXUS, PHRENIC NERVE, THYROCERVICAL TRUNK,
VERTEBRAL VEIN AND FIRST PART OF SUBCLAVIAN ARTERY
ON LEFT SIDE IT PASSES IN FRONT OF THORACIC DUCT
• MEDIALLY
ABOVE LIE INTERNAL CAROTID ARTERY AND 9TH,10TH,11TH AND 12TH CRANIAL NERVES
INTERNAL JUGULAR VEIN
TRIBUTARIES
• INFERIOR PETROSAL SINUS
• FACIAL VEIN
•PHARYNGEAL VEINS
•LINGUAL VEIN
• SUPERIOR THYROID VEIN
• MIDDLE THYROID VEIN
SUBCLAVIAN VEIN
•IT IS CONTINUATION OF AXILLARY VEIN AT OUTER BORDER OF FIRST RIB
• IT JOINS INTERNAL JUGULAR VEIN TO FORM BRACHIOCEPHALIC VEIN AND IT
RECEIVES EXTERNAL JUGULAR VEIN
• ALSO IT RECEIVES THORACIC DUCT ON LEFT SIDE AND RIGHT LYMPHATIC DUCT
ON RIGHT
RELATIONS
• ANTERIORLY
