Professional Experience
Thorough understanding of all aspects of Pioneer Seed Production Research in North America
(NA), interacting with key constituents in Production, Research, and Sales. Responsibilities
included working with all NA seed crops; prioritizing, planning, executing, summarizing, and
reporting results from small-plot and seed field studies.
Provided administrative oversight for Seed Production Research at Champaign, IL and
Constantine, MI, supervising full-time and temporary staff.
Coordinated Southern Hemisphere Seed Production Research protocols and results reviews for
world-wide staff. Organized a monthly statistics webinar that targeted world-wide staff in Pre-
Foundation Seeds.
2. J.P. Schmidt, 2
Directly supervised 11 research scientists, two support staff, and two administrative staff at
USDA-ARS. Second-line supervisor for all other staff at the location (40-50 total staff).
Overall coordination of research programs for location.
Responsible for a $4.5 million annual budget, annual performance reviews, personnel actions,
all aspects of day-to-day operations at USDA-ARS, and maintained an excellent individual
research program.
Formal presentations have included international, national, regional, state, and local
professional meetings and seminars. Have regularly participated in farmer field days, extension
workshops, and one-on-one conversations with farmer. Led all-hands meetings at USDA-ARS.
Excellent presentation and interpersonal communication skills.
Thorough understanding of all aspects of soils and agronomic research from project
development to technology transfer. Emphasis at Kansas State University was in the then-
emerging precision agriculture technologies. Emphasis at USDA-ARS continued to rely on
GIS technologies, but focusing on land use and watershed impacts and management.
Extensive experience with a suite of statistical analyses, including: linear and non-linear
regressions, multivariate analyses, spatial analyses, Monte Carlo simulations, temporal
analyses, and other tools. Formal education in statistics at North Carolina State University
provided a sound statistical base. Participation in multidisciplinary teams that have included
statisticians, crop scientists, ag engineers, ag economists, hydrologists and scientists from other
disciplines has provided exposure to statistical approaches and jargon of these various
disciplines, expanding the depth and breadth of my statistical skills and experience.
Professional experience is combined with a first-hand understanding of agriculture from
growing up on a row crop / livestock farm in south-central Illinois.
Organizational planning and leadership experience at the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of
Centre County, PA, a 280-member church with a $290,000 annual budget; activities included
board president, 6-year board member, led the development of two 5-yr plans, led an effort for
significant changes in bylaws and governance reorganization, led a $1.2 million building
expansion, and co-led the fundraising for this expansion.
Computer skills include MicroSoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint; Outlook); SAS
Statistical Software; ArcView / ArcGIS; and others on as-need basis. Excellent typing skills.
Author or co-author on 50+ peer-reviewed papers, three book chapters, 30+ proceedings, 70+
abstracts/presentations.
