This document discusses potential film distribution companies for a psychological horror film. It analyzes Sony, Warp Films, and 20th Century Fox as options. Warp Films is selected because, as an independent UK company, it focuses on niche stories and British issues, allowing controversial subjects without pressure to appeal to mass markets. While Warp Films' smaller budgets mean fewer screens and locations, the content and style would be less affected than the budget. Warp Films has successfully distributed similar British films dealing with controversial topics.

Evaluation question 3
1. WHAT KIND OF MEDIA
INSTITUTION MIGHT DISTRIBUTE
YOUR MEDIA PRODUCT AND WHY?
2. EXAMPLE OF DISTRIBUTION
COMPANIES
Sony is an example of a conglomerate. It is a Japanese multinational conglomerate
corporation that is headquartered in Kōnan, Minato, Tokyo. It is a diverse business as
they make many different products such as electronics, gaming, entertainment and
financial services. They have distributed films such as clash of titans, Evil dead, Godzilla
and the independent film Whiplash.
Another company is Warp films. Warp films is an independent film and TV company
based in Sheffield, United kingdom and has created films such as This is England and
Submarine and they primarily go with more niche storyline films.
Finally 20th century fox is also another example of a film distributor. It is an American film
studio that is currently owned by 21st century fox and is one of the Big six major
American film studios located in the Century city area of Los Angles. They have
distributed films such as x-men and Deadpool.
3. HOW MIGHT ALL THESE DIFFERENT
INSTITUTIONS PRODUCE THE FILM
DIFFERENTLY?
Out of the three companies I have decided to chose Warp films as I feel that it caters more to the genre and
narrative that our film has more than the other two companies. (Sony and 20th Century Fox). I believe this
because both of the other two are large conglomerates and this would mean that we would have to change
our film to fit with there expectations as our film faces some serious issues that some companies would not
like to distribute as it can create a controversial matt. Warp Films also specialise in creating media products
for a more niche market which means they focus on attracting a specific audience rather than trying to fit in
to the mainstream market. Warp Films also has created many famous British films that include This is
England which is a 2006 British Drama film written and directed by Shane Meadows. The story reflects on
young skinhead in 1983 England. Another film they have made was Submarine which is a 2010 British
quirky Comedy-drama film adapted from the 2008 novel with the same name. Submarine is based on a 15
year old who is struggling to keep his mother and fathers relationship together but also to try and focus on
his love life.
4. THE COMPANY I CHOSE
The company that I decided to choose was the independent film and TV company Warp Films based in Sheffield,
United Kingdom and was established in 1999 by Rob Mitchell and Steve Beckett and is the sister company to the
record label Warp records which was established in 1998. They produce a wide range of films that tend to focus
more on British problems and having a niche storyline rather than the typical mainstream choices they could of
taken. This mean that they focus primarily on a niche audience and market.
The company is one of the biggest UK independent film producer and has produced many popular Tv shows and
films that mainly focus on British ideologies and problems. These are as followed:
• ‘71
• This is England
• Submarine
• Dead man’s shoes
5. HOW MIGHT HAVE BUDGE, STYLE OR
CONTENT BEEN AFFECTED?
The main factor that would be affected is budget as if we have Warp films as a distributor they do not have as
large of a budget to give compared to large conglomerates such as Sony which in turn would affect how
many screens and what type of cinemas the film would be distributed to. An example of the small budgets
Warp films has is ‘71 which had a budget of £8,1 million and This is England had a very small budget of £1.5
million. They do not get as large of budgets as Warp Films is independent and is not backed by one of the
Big six and they target a niche audience which can result in lower profits at the box office compared to
Hollywood movies.
The content and style also would be affected but to not as much as budget because Warp films likes to focus
on British ideologies and problems which they may want to convey in our film. An example is Four lions
which is about four terrorist jihadis from Sheffield and is a black comedy as it focuses on a controversial
subject. Our film is a psychological horror which is a sun genre of horror and typically is not as popular
compared to slasher horrors therefore Warp films would be the best distribution company for us as it would
allow us to focus on a niche audience and keep the controversial subjects in our film as Lucy our main
character struggles with mental health issues.
