Good Evening and thank you for joining us at the 66th Annual Meeting of the Catalina Island Chamber of Commerce & Visitors Bureau
It has been an exceptional year for the Chamber and Bureau, Wayne’s retirement, the Executive search, my arrival, an incredible New Year’s storm, and very successful NYE ball. We have also undertaken some organizational assessments like a staff retreat and a board retreat. We brought to Catalina Island its first celebration of National Travel & Tourism Week and then of course you all know a bit already about WhateverUSA, but we are going to tell you more.
First off we are going to tell you about some of our Marketing and PR efforts. Destination Marketing makes up the majority of our efforts and represents the majority of our budget in expenses.
Donna Harris is going to come up and share some of the highlights of the past fiscal year.

So as I said earlier, it has been an eventful year. Some of the most important things for you to be aware of include…An IRS Audit on our 2011 earned revenue, for which we came out fine, completion of the audited financials, delayed by the IRS audit, Dealt with a settlement on a copyright challenge from a former vendor.
Some of the metrics by which we account for our success include …..
Total Visitor Driven revenues to the city ended at +18%
TOT Revenues – 25% increase
Admission Taxes – 43% increase
Harbor Use Fees – 21% increase
Sales Tax – 19% increase
Wharfage Fees - Cross Channel – 9% increase
Wharfage Fees – Cruise Chips – 5% increase
Cruise passengers slightly down due to fewer Mondays in first quarter and some cancellations due to weather
Cross channel carriers up about 7%
Jim L
Some highlights of the recent retreats include a much shorter and easier to recite Mission Statement and some clearly articulated goals……
WhateverUSA was an incredible success. When you look at the measures recently updated by Anheuser Busch representatives, you cannot help but be impressed, and the ongoing impact of television commercials and videos shot on the Island during the event will be huge as well. Here is the latest video….

Harvey Cowell Business of the Year Award
The Harvey Cowell Business of the Year Award is given in honor of Harvey Cowell, one of 15 visionary businessmen who on June 2, 1949 founded the Avalon Catalina Island Chamber of Commerce. Harvey Cowell was the proprietor of Island Pharmacy, was a prominent leader of the Catalina Island business community, served as an Avalon City Council Member and Mayor, and remained active in the community until his death at the age of 98 in March 2011.
The Harvey Cowell Business of the Year Award was established to recognize an extraordinary contribution by a business to the furtherance of tourism to Avalon and Catalina Island.
This year, five businesses were nominated by business members of the Chamber. The nominated businesses are:
Catalina Beverage Company
Catalina Film Festival
Catalina Diver Supply
US Bank (Gallery Space)
Catalina Auto & Bike Rentals/Lloyds
A committee of the Chamber’s Board of Directors was appointed to review the nominations and select this year’s winner.
The recipient of the 2015 Harvey Cowell Business of the Year Award is _____________________________

Invite Levent up to receive award.
Since Levent purchased Catalina Beverage, there have been considerable upgrades in equipment and operations. Levent took on the challenge by applying corporate expertise to the business. Wisely, upon his purchase of the company, he immediately began forming professional relationships with customers and business leaders. It is apparent he has a business plan designed to grow the business, providing enhanced service to Catalina Island. His capital investment, both immediate and anticipated, is indicative of his commitment to the company's success.
Recently, Levent, using his industry relationships, was vitally instrumental in procuring the Up For Whatever event to Catalina Island. Through Catalina Beverage, the City of Avalon received the many benefits afforded us by this phenomenal event. Businesses and residents alike will reap the marketing rewards this event will generate for months to come. Although there were many players to be credited with the success of Up or Whatever, Levent and Catalina Beverage were certainly in the forefront of the efforts.
Catalina Beverage exemplifies community support that benefits all of Catalina. Levent and his staff are deserving of this award.
Mention the earlier departure of Elaine Vaughan and Juliette Walters
Any past Chairs in the room, will you please stand? Please join me in thanking each of these folks for the gift of their time and talent to our organization and community.
Invite Cathy Mesch to podium
