one of the youngest social sciences.
Auguste Comte, a French social
thinker, is traditionally known as the
‘Father of Sociology’ as he coined the
term ‘Sociology’ in 1839.

Sociology is divided into 3 main divisions
Social morphology:- Geographical or territorial basis of life of
people like population, size, density distribution etc.
Social physiology:- Studies origin & nature of various social
institutions like religion, economy, education, kinship.
General sociology:- General social laws in the society.

• Study of society in a scientific manner
• Helps understand the social nature of man
• Helps understand various cultures, customs,
traditions, norms and values followed by different
societies at different places
• Improves our understanding of society
• Sociology helps dealing with social problems
• Sociology draws our attention to the dignity and
