2. Irregular Plural Nouns
These are nouns that change their
spelling when forming it’s plural.
man – men
foot – feet
child - children
3. Rule #1 – If the singular noun
ends in -us, the plural ending is
frequently -i.
Example:
cactus – cacti
focus – foci
4. Rule #2 – If the singular noun
ends in -is, the plural ending
is -es.
Example
analysis – analyses
ellipsis – ellipses
5. Rule #3 – If the singular noun
ends in -on, the plural ending
is -a.
Example
phenomenon – phenomena
criterion – criteria
6. Rule #4 – Some nouns don’t change
at all when they’re pluralized.
Example
sheep – sheep trout - trout
series – series shrimp - shrimp
fish – fish salmon - salmon
deer – deer species – species
7. Some irregular nouns do not have
specific rule in forming their plural, so
it’s best to memorize these or look up
the proper pluralization in the
dictionary.
