Mitophagy and mitochondrial biogenesis in atrial
tissue of patients undergoing heart surgery with
cardiopulmonary bypass
Impact factor: 6.014 (2018)
3. BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY:
Ischemia/Reperfusion
injury
Heart Surgery
Cardiopulmonary Bypass
– On-pump Heart surgery
But still I/R injury
causes high rate of
mortality

CARDIOPLEGIA
4. OBJECTIVE OF THE STUDY:
Mitochondrial turn over
Mitochondrial BiogenesisMitophagy
To test the hypothesis that
mitochondrial turnover is
activated during cardiac
surgery in humans
Can mitochondria be
a suitable target for
myocardial
protection?10/25/2019 4
5. 10/25/2019 5
Experiments to test the hypothesis:
Protein expression – Western Blotting – Ponceau-s staining
Mitochondrial Copy number analysis – qRT PCR
Polysome profiling
Statistical tools :
a) Student – t test
b) Regression analysis

Homeostatic Intracellular
Repair Response (HIR2)
MITOPHAGYMITOCHONDRIAL
BIOGENESIS
ISCHEMIC CONDITIONS
SUPPRESSION OF GLOBAL PROTEIN
SYNTHESIS
REASON The translation of mitochondria Biogenesis targeted mRNAs may be cap
independent, enabling translation despite global suppression of protein synthesis
(Komarr et al.,).
Mitophagy is
transpired after
sometime
But Biogenesis
still persists
Discussion:
15. Conclusion:
These findings highlight the existence of a robust physiological stimulus
for mitochondrial elimination and replacement in response to cardiac
surgery.
This reveals them to be potential pathways for interventions to modulate
mitochondrial turnover during or after surgery to enhance ischemia
tolerance in patients.

COURSE FEEDBACK
The Course “Academic writing” was very useful in understanding the basic etiquettes in
writing which is essential for pursuing a successful career in scientific research
It has improvised my writing skills to a greater extent which I am able to observe in
every writing that I am currently doing.
