Discussion:

15. Conclusion:
 These findings highlight the existence of a robust physiological stimulus
for mitochondrial elimination and replacement in response to cardiac
surgery.
 This reveals them to be potential pathways for interventions to modulate
mitochondrial turnover during or after surgery to enhance ischemia
tolerance in patients.
