2. Bell ringer
Do you think the following objects will sink or float? Why?
1) Can of Coca-Cola
2) Can of diet Coca-Cola
3.
4. Density is a relationship between the mass and volume of an object.
It is how much mass is packed into a certain volume.
𝐷𝑒𝑛𝑠𝑖𝑡𝑦 =
𝑀𝑎𝑠𝑠
𝑉𝑜𝑙𝑢𝑚𝑒
5. What determines if something will sink or
float in water?
• The density of water is 1 gram/milliliter.
• If an objects’ density is greater than 1 it will sink
• If an objects’ density is less than 1 it will float.
6. Determine the density of a cone with a mass of 16 grams and a volume
of 8 milliliters.
8. Lucy stores her cat food in a cylindrical can that has a height of 6 inches,
a radius of 3 inches and a mass of 200 grams. She stores her fish food in
a cylindrical can that has a height of 3 inches, a radius of 1 inch, and a
mass of 6 grams. She accidentally drops both of them in the fish tank.
Determine the volume and density of these cylindrical cans to
determine if they will sink or float in the water.
