Groundwater is water located beneath the Earth's surface in soil and rock pores and fractures. It is contained in geologic formations called aquifers. There are two types of aquifers - confined aquifers that are sandwiched between layers of impermeable rock or sediment, and unconfined aquifers where the water table lies below layers of permeable rock or sediment. Groundwater is an important resource that is used for drinking water, agricultural irrigation, and industrial uses by many communities.
